Yesterday's trip was a first in several ways. Neither Doug nor I had ever plowed through that much ice in order to go fishing. Like Doug said, it was really noisy as we watched the broken pieces of ice slide away from the boat. Doug was at the helm; this way, if we get stuck, I won't be blamed. Mo was waiting, about a half mile down river, for us to pick him up. He could see us approaching so he called on the cell phone. The crushing ice was so noisy that I could not hear him! Doug's report was very accurate. It was a fun day. I gave the fish to Luan who counted nine YP and one LMB.

Today I will be ordering more Silver Buddies. Several weeks ago I showed Mo where he could order them on the net but his reply was " Why do I need to order more? I already have one." These novices have so much to learn.

At the trips' end, one thought came to mind. I really wanted Doug to enjoy the trip but, after talking with him, I learned that he is not excited about such small quarry. The lures that he regularly uses are probably larger than the fish that we were trying to catch! This man regularly goes after rockfish and bluefish. As we fished, Doug would land a fish without any hoorah. He said that he was surprised that Ernie and I were so excited when he caught his thirteen inch YP last week. To put things in perspectve, for him, I told him that the first fourteen inch YP will be hung on my wall!

Mo got me back in line.  Small fish on light tackle are really more fun than big fish on broomsticks.

I have taught my grandson that if it's a big fish you say - "That's a whopper."  If it's a small fish you say - "Beautiful color."  Guess I may have to work with him on something related to fish size vs. tackle size.

Mo, I think you missed the point of the story.  Carl wasn't volunteering to buy more Silver Buddies.  He was suggesting a web site where you can buy Silver Buddies all by yourself.  You need more than one lure, old Son.

Doug--you are right about the good Dr. I'm trying to get him into the whole essence of fishing. It is so much more than dashing to some fishing hole, catch fish, and go home. Ernie and I were talking about this a couple of days ago and you and I talked about it on this trip. You asked me "What is it about fishing." I don't have an answer. For some of us, it is a life thing. For me, there is nothing I would rather do. I get excited waiting for a package of lures to come in the mail or going out to my garage and arranging things in the boat. I like talking to other fishing addicts and sharing ideas. I realize Mo has limited time for fishing but, so far I haven't been able to slow him down enough to take in the whole picture.

By the way, Carl, it's a real fishing addict who is on Pacemaker at 4:29 am!
