Another great day on Carl's boat. What a terrific fishing platform!
Captain Carl and a crew of Doug and Mo.
On the way out we had to break through about a half mile of 1/2 inch thick ice which was a new experience for all. Surprisingly loud. The good news was that it scraped all the stains off the side of Carl's boat.
Ice breaking in the Rhino
Lots of argument about what the tide actually was (Doug - "High tide was at 7:09." Carl - "High tide was at roughly 10:00"). One of us has to figure out how to read the tide tables.
Slow for most of the morning but picked up about noon. Caught steadily for two hours or so. We lost track of the actual number we caught (YP, one LM, and several Sunfish) but we all agreed that it was significantly more than Doug and Carl caught with Ernie on Saturday.
Carl does a little advertising in his customer hat
Mo caught the biggest (LM). Carl and Doug called foul, however, as Mo decided the best bait was a 1/4 ounce Silver Buddy and proceeded to "lose" two of Carl's three leaving Carl and Doug without a hot bait. Doug came back with a 1/2 ounce Gold version with hypnotic, flashing, holographic, striped, winking, side panels. Carl insists that owning such a bait doesn't actually make him a sissy.
Mo's Largemouth - biggest of the day
As always, Carl had the hot hand and put the most fish in the boat.

Yesterday's trip was a first in several ways. Neither Doug nor I had ever plowed through that much ice in order to go fishing. Like Doug said, it was really noisy as we watched the broken pieces of ice slide away from the boat. Doug was at the helm; this way, if we get stuck, I won't be blamed. Mo was waiting, about a half mile down river, for us to pick him up. He could see us approaching so he called on the cell phone. The crushing ice was so noisy that I could not hear him! Doug's report was very accurate. It was a fun day. I gave the fish to Luan who counted nine YP and one LMB.
Today I will be ordering more Silver Buddies. Several weeks ago I showed Mo where he could order them on the net but his reply was " Why do I need to order more? I already have one." These novices have so much to learn.
At the trips' end, one thought came to mind. I really wanted Doug to enjoy the trip but, after talking with him, I learned that he is not excited about such small quarry. The lures that he regularly uses are probably larger than the fish that we were trying to catch! This man regularly goes after rockfish and bluefish. As we fished, Doug would land a fish without any hoorah. He said that he was surprised that Ernie and I were so excited when he caught his thirteen inch YP last week. To put things in perspectve, for him, I told him that the first fourteen inch YP will be hung on my wall!

I remember the days of only having 1 or 2 fishing poles and a small box of lures.
Now, I have a tackle shop in my garage.
I have always wondered as to how many lures (how much$$) I have lost over the years!
Yikes?!!!

Mo got me back in line. Small fish on light tackle are really more fun than big fish on broomsticks.
I have taught my grandson that if it's a big fish you say - "That's a whopper." If it's a small fish you say - "Beautiful color." Guess I may have to work with him on something related to fish size vs. tackle size.

I have to say I did enjoy myself yesterday. Between Doug and Carl there wasn't a moment of silence. We had a joke-a-ton, Carl would tell his joke and then Doug will do his joke. And when they were not telling jokes they were teasing yours truly. I think Doug was amazed that I only have been fishing for six months but yet I was a professional. I will have to give all the credit to my professor. I know I will never hear the end of the day I told Carl not to buy anymore silver buddies, I guess that is why you got to love the man.
Can't wait for those white perch!

Mo, I think you missed the point of the story. Carl wasn't volunteering to buy more Silver Buddies. He was suggesting a web site where you can buy Silver Buddies all by yourself. You need more than one lure, old Son.

Doug--you are right about the good Dr. I'm trying to get him into the whole essence of fishing. It is so much more than dashing to some fishing hole, catch fish, and go home. Ernie and I were talking about this a couple of days ago and you and I talked about it on this trip. You asked me "What is it about fishing." I don't have an answer. For some of us, it is a life thing. For me, there is nothing I would rather do. I get excited waiting for a package of lures to come in the mail or going out to my garage and arranging things in the boat. I like talking to other fishing addicts and sharing ideas. I realize Mo has limited time for fishing but, so far I haven't been able to slow him down enough to take in the whole picture.

Carl - you're right.
Here's the start of a list:
Getting organized for the Spring season
Planning a trip (big or small)
Organizing your tackle
Right now the ping pong table in my basement is covered with reels and spools of line
Remembering how to tie a really good back-to-back uni-knot to join braided line to mono
Going on the web to find the best package/price for new baits (ie; Silver Buddies, Mo)
Getting a package from Bass Pro or Herb's Tackle Shop

By the way, Carl, it's a real fishing addict who is on Pacemaker at 4:29 am!

Ernie, after fishing in 25 deg. with sideways snow in a 20 kt. wind I'm wondering what constitutes a "no go".
That is a good question!! I was really ready for that trip...the 1st one after the surgery. Plus the fish were a bit bigger than what we are getting in the Occoquan.
