I got out early for a half day trip. Was hoping for topwater, or at least active fish. Was on the water by 6am. I made a run and anchored near the head of an island.
I did not see any surface activity but I started throwing my little popper. Right then, I saw some fish hitting the surface. On maybe my second cast, I hooked a little smallie. I could not remember where I put my phone, so no picture.
I made another cast and hooked another little guy.
I missed another and then the surface activity died off, so I threw a little jig and craw. I caught another little smallie. It was 6:17am.
That bite died, so I moved to mid-river and threw the jig. After a couple casts, I hooked something bigger. After a nice fight, I saw it was a catfish.
Next, I caught this little chunk. Picture got washed out by flash.
And then a little better one. Then one more on the jig.

I had 6 smallies and the catfish before 7:30am.
My little jig broke, so I switched to a keitech and caught a nicer one.

The bite slowed, but I continued to catch more smallies in the 13-14 inch range. Mostly with the keitech and a Little Dipper swimbait.
No big fish, but they fought hard and I was having a blast. Once the sun came out from the clouds around 10:30am, the bite really slowed and then shut down.
I ended up with 12 smallies and the one catfish. I tried for a little while longer, but no bites after 11:00am. Off the water before 1pm. Best numbers day so far. The fish were very active in the morning.
