When I had my boats (40+ years), I almost always "booked" my trips ahead of time. Especially when I was working. I wanted to make sure that the fishing time was blocked off and that I had someone to go with me. And I would pray for good weather. Rarely, did I fish alone (who the heck would I talk to).
Now, I find myself doing the same thing booking multiple guides and fishing partners. And actually, it's a little harder now because there are more moving parts. But it's all good! I must fill the calendar!!
Back around mid April, I noticed that I had nothing scheduled for this week so I reached out to Mike and we booked a half day with Chris. Today was the day.
It was crispy cool in the morning but the sun was warming and we had a delightful day to fish. Almost no clouds and very little wind.
Mike took the skunk off 1st (on a crank)! He caught a couple more that way.
I resisted but finally ended up throwing it a could of dozen times. No luck but also no confidence. I find it boring.
The water looked great and somehow, it had some stain to it but the fish were finicky. There are some fish still doing their thing for sure. Soon, it will be post spawn.
I ended up with two smallies and two that were on for just a second or two. No other bites. Mike had 3 or 4.
Great sites!
I wonder were we were...
Sorry (again) for the lack of pics but unless there are some big fatsos, they don't get a shot. Plus, sometimes, the raft is moving a Chris has to man the oars which makes picture taking a task.
We were hungry, no, starving (no snacks on board on purpose) when we finished so we headed over to Big Belly's. I had their incredible smash-burger, gone in a few minutes. Chris had their Nashville Hot and it was the biggest piece of chicken breast I've ever seen. Mike had a gyro and that looked really good. So why no pics? Who the heck knows?
Great day out...can't wait for the smallies to stop frolicking and start playing for real!

What a beautiful day to be out! Some fish are better than no fish for sure. A delicious meal after being out on the river, perfection!

Solid pre-spawn
But wondering. Does this cold get them out of the baby-making mood? Wonder if they stop until the water hits a certain temp to start spawning again?

We talked about that a bit while on the water. But we did not see any beds where we were even though it looked like prime territory in some places..
Moon plays but water temperature plays more. They (who knows who) say that spawning activity usually occurs when temps are between 55°F and 70°F with peak at 60°F and 63°F. We have been at those temps all of April.

I've been wondering the same thing re:spawning. This time of year I like to swing by a local lake on my lunch break to see what the fish are doing. When we had that hot weather a week or two ago the largemouth were up on the banks looking like they were about to spawn. Then it got cold right after that and I haven't seen any since. Either they had a really quick spawn or they postponed it. Never did see any crappie.

I know...and I have plenty of them (single hooks, of course). I even had Danny Grulke build me a crank rod a few years ago. I just like the finesse bite more.
