Three of us were prepared to fish yesterday. Float we picked was roaring with water which caused one to drop out. I agreed.
Contacted the other guy and he really wanted to fish. So did I. So we found a float that was safe, had decent river flow, but was a drive. Goes to show you that with enough gas, you can always catch fish. I haven't done this float in over 30 years. In fact, last time I did this float was at the first RiverSmallie rodeo I attended. Sadly, both people I fished with that day are no longer with us.
Day started out chiliy but by the time we launch, we were already shedding layers. It got up to the upper 70's. Still glad I wore waders because water temps were still in the 40's. Birds were everywhere, even saw a couple sand hill cranes.
Fished tubes, grubs and swim baits. Caught my first couple fish on the tube. Nice bread and butter sized fish but decided not to pull out the camera.
About 1/2 mile from the take out, saw my line tighten, rod tip bend so when in doubt, set the hook. Took me about 10 minutes to settle the fish down enough to get it in the net. My buddy was up river, so decided to paddle over to the shore, wedge myself in rocks that had allot of current, dig out my camera and take a pix. This was the heaviest fish I've ever caught in Virginia. Fish didn't even fit in the net.
Got a couple pix, then released it for another day. After getting settled back into the yak, I pushed off and noticed I had an observer posing for a pix, so had to take it
Got home much later than anticipated and again wondered, what are all these people doing on the road?

Well done!

Man, I wish I hadn't been the one to drop out because I would have loved to have seen that river monster in person. However, yesterday just wasn't today for me to be making a long drive with things going on at the house. But I was glad to get that call to hear about catching that beast.

Awesome bass! What do you estimate on that one? And, the turtle pic captures the day....enjoy the sun and heat!

I'm a minimalist when I kayak. Thing backpacking. No measuring boards. No scale. Just a couple rods/reels, small tackle bag of baits, some safety gear, first aid kit, paddle and life vest.
I build rods with a marker at 15" and 18.5". With the tail at the butt of the rod, the head extended my whole hand over the 18.5 mark. As far as weigh, it was heavy. Once I finally got it in the net, it took both arms and a couple grunts to lift it in the yak.
I got other pix, but decided to be nice to the board-masters
The snapping turtle checking the whole ordeal out was way kowl

No worries, problems seem to be fixed...for now anyway.
