I got out to hit a spot I like to try for topwater smallies this time of year. Plan worked out. I saw surface activity and my little popper (black color with white feather tail) got the skunk out pretty quick. I was lucky because I had a tangle in my line I was working out when the fish hit.
A few casts later a smallie launched out of the water and missed the popper. I let the popper sit and it did it again. This time I pulled the lure a little bit and I thought that may have blown it, but a smallie grabbed it and took it under. It was not a big one, but a blast to see and get hooked up.
It was pretty chilly with fog delaying the sun for a bit.
No more topwater bites. I threw a wacky rigged senko for a bit. I lost the first one on a bite and then no more bites after that. I left abut 8:30am or so.
That area of the river looked really blown out with shoreline erosion and big trees knocked over. I had not caught a smallie since August, so mission accomplished.
