Between work, extra 4 legged house guests, high water levels, it had been more than a few minutes since I was on the river in the kayak. I planned to take yesterday off for a little single access session and was able to. Weather called for overcast with potential rain showers late in the afternoon.
I got started about 11 and had a light rain for most of the first 3 hours. I was looking forward to a lot of topwater action, but that really didn't happen. The water was still a little dirtier than I expected. But i did get a classic fluke blowup for my first fish that went about 14-15". Threw the fluke into an eddy behind a shoreline rock and water blew up after a couple of twitches. Then picked up another one fairly quickly on a bulkier swimbait. Threw a black Choppo and then a buzzbait in and around a large area of shallower, riffle areas but they just didn't want either. Also tried a spinnerbair with no luck.
I did pick up another 3 on the swimbait and brown/orange crankbait while it was raining. I did switch the swimbait to the darker green/black that works so well. George knows the color!
I was getting ready to head out, with the rain stopped, and decided to hit one more area. I threw the swimbait into an eddy area right behind a single rock and got a small one. So decided to go along the downstream side of a ledge rock stretching about 3/4 of the way across the river. Casting the swimbait and crankbait right into an obvious area. Doing that gave me 4-5 snallies. Lost a potential nice one that picked it up and on the attempted hookset just shot off and didn't stay on.
All in all it was a good day. Wasn't working, got back on the river and caught some smallies. It's time for a least one solo afternoon a week in the river with a floata mixed in there.
