I planned to get out early and beat the rain. On the water about 5:15am. This was the first morning I did not have to wear a jacket. River was just over 4 feet at Point of Rocks and temp started around 64 degrees..
Caught some fish busting and after getting positioned and a couple casts to figure out if they would hit topwater, it was on. Mostly smaller fish. First picture was a bigger fish, but it had sores/lesions on one side.

They would only hit smaller lures that I guess were closer to the small baitfish they were feeding on.

I had one rod rigged with a hair, rabbit strip jig George tied. I figured it would look like the little baitfish and it worked well for the little schooling fish. M
Finally took sunrise picture.

I ended up with 18 smallies at the first spot. Then I made a move. My 2 homemade jigs became the hot lures, along with an arkie style hair/silicone jig I have had for years and lost as my only break off. My first fish at spot 2 was a big one. It was a great fight on my light rod, but it had sores/lesions also.

Catching picked up at spot 3.

I was at 34 smallies when that spot died down. I made a run. The next 2 areas did not produce. Push water on an island point and mid river got no bites, so I decided to float an island. It took a little bit, but I started picking up fish on my jig.

I ate my sandwich. Some guys in another boat pulled up behind me, so I had to keep moving to keep them from catching up. The bite was picking up again. I made it to 40 smallies with 2 good ones.

Huge Heron.
I decided to try a crankbait. Little Bomber Fat A 4F in baby bass pattern. After a few casts as I slowed my retrieve before the lure surfaced. this catfish came up slowly and grabbed it.
I was getting tired but decided to throw the crank again.

That made 42 smallies and 1 catfish. I decided to call it just after 12:00 noon. The guys caught up to me and I said hello. Made it back to the empty ramp and off the water before 12:30pm. I was beat, but had a great time.

Don't you just luv it when baits you made work?

Yes. It is the hook that makes them especially good. Those are from Craig DeFronzo's jigs. I have only made 2 and they are still in good shape overall. They are 1/16 oz. I have 2 more of those and 3 in 1/8 oz. I have not used yet. I am no pro jig tyer.
One of them has caught at least 4 smallies over 19 inches, including my 5.77 pounder earlier this year.

What a day! Awesome series. It's been hit or miss with the weather down in the Fredericksburg area for me so it's nice to see others really having epic days.
