Crankbait strikes again

I had a chance to get out for just a couple of hours so of course I hit the river.  Water is low and green and looking good.  It was an interesting evening as I only landed two smallies but had another 6 or 7 grab a hold of the fluke or swimbait but couldn't get them hooked.

But highlight of only catching 2 was that this chunk was THIS CLOSE to 18.5". Just like the big one from last Friday, this one hit the brown and orange crankbait. I was working a shallower rapid area, standing on a rock and casting into the seam along fast water.  The fish grabbed it about 10' away.

Brown/crawdad color cranks have become my big smallie lure since last summer.  I will be throwing it the rest of the summer and into fall

Re: Crankbait strikes again

Nice fish!  I love to throw crankbaits when they work.  Usually, now through June is a good time.  I like to throw small ones mostly in the river.  I caught a 20"er either last year or the year before.  It just completely stopped the lure.  I could see the fish in the clearer water with the crank in its mouth.  It did not realize it was hooked until I started reeling it in.  It was post-spawn.  In the summertime, shallow running crank and wakebaits will work in the clear shallow water.

Always wishin' I was fishin'

Re: Crankbait strikes again

Last summer the end of June through August I got six fish over 17 and 1/2 in with the crankbait icluding the one that was almost 19 and a half.  I used it that much until then. But you're right, give me a medium. The shallow running brown and orange crankbaits with a square bill and I'm ready to go
