Left Northern VA early Saturday morning with my long time friends Jim Rekas (turned 54 today) and Kevin McMonigle. We stared with a great breakfast sandwich at the Chaptico Deli and some of their great home made bread pudding. At 7:30AM, we put in at Chaptico Wharf on the Wicomico River with hopes of seeing working birds on the Potomac. We covered lots of river but did not see any bird action from St. Clements to Swan Point. So we settled in and decided to get some white perch for dinner. Kevin had never done this before so I showed him how to work the beetle spins and tiny spoons we were using on 4 & 6 lb test. On his second cast, he gets the 1st fish of the day which was his 1st perch ever and it was 10+ inches!
I knew it was gong to be a great day!
We caught more keeper (8.5”+) perch today than any day I can remember, at least 40. They were big (up to 11”) and fat!
Around 1PM, we saw a school of breaking fish and we just could not cast and catch fast enough…..stripers on every cast and even a double. We caught a couple that were close but no keepers.
That was a blast! But within 30 minutes, it was over and we headed in for lunch at Quades for our traditional crab cake sandwich.
Before we left to go home we made a stop at an old perch hole that I remembered and we caught several more keepers.
We actually kept count today (a contest, as boys will be boys) and the final tally was 231 white perch and 24 stripers.
Happy Birthday Jim!! Wow!
