Went out with Bev Carroll today and we got out on the water at Gravelly Point at 7:30 AM, a little late for the big stripers. But we were going after white perch so we could have our first fish fry of the year! It was cold in the morning and then the winds picked up but there is plenty of protection up there.
Motored up (lots of crew teams out!) to just above Three Sisters and threw in the anchor. For a few hours, we caught lots of 6-9 inch white perch on little minnows but we only kept the few that were over 8". Water temps near 60.
Then I remembered that I used to fish for white perch (Fletcher's area) with a double spreader rig and little 1/16 & 1/8 jigs on the ends. So we went to that and started catching less perch but BIGGER perch. We ended up catching over 30 keepers with the biggest at 13 inches!
We also had: 1- 12", 2- 11" and 8- 10".....not a bad day!
But....I also had a rig out to the side with a 5/0 circle hook and a 2 oz weight. That rig got 2 Hickory shad that were big, an American shad, three blue cats with the biggest (Buzzy got that one) being 15.6 lbs......
.....and two stripers!
Yes, I finally got the skunk off for a striper! It was C & R so cares how big it was! OK, it was 16" but it was a STRIPER (sorry, no pics)!!!!
