VA Beach, 6-27-09

The fishing possibilities down in the VA Beach area are endless....

George Lenard, Dave Gedra and I left the Woodbridge area at 2 PM and arrived at VA Beach at 8 PM (we did stop for dinner in Tappahannock). Isn't Rt. 95 traffic just the best??

The original forecast for Saturday morning called for rain and some wind but when we got up at 0430, the rain had come and gone and there was no wind.....

This was cool...a before and after picture!

Then we left Lynnhaven inlet and all of the sudden, we were facing 20+ knot winds! You have to be kidding me!

We got out of the way of the wind and started jigging the 1st island at the CBBT. George Lenard takes the skunk off with a less than legal flounder (VA regs call for a 19" keeper!).

Dave catches a small ble and another flounder and he gets on the board.

I see a couple of rays and remember Donnie Davis of DOA Charters, Oregon Inlet NC telling me to immediately make a cast as there might be a cobia underneath them. I did and the cobia was not there but I hooked a cow nose ray. Twenty minutes later, we landed the beast!

I will take pullage any time! A few minutes later I caught a normal fish...this mighty blue fish!

We were still working the giant rip rap at the 1st island when George announced that he was hung up. Funny thing, I have never seen a rock (not fish) move! George is now hooked up with a monster. Is it a ray? A cobia? A black drum?

http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj320/Kiko13PB/IMGP0084.jpg

Well.....82 minutes later the team lands this black drum!

http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj320/Kiko13PB/IMGP0091.jpg

How big is he? BIG....really BIG! It measures out at 48" but we do not get a weight.

http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj320/Kiko13PB/IMGP0093.jpg

What a monster....on 20 lb line to boot!

http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj320/Kiko13PB/IMGP0095.jpg

After that catch, we left to troll up some Spanish Mackerel and blues. Don't ask me why we did that, I am still trying to figure that out because for the next several hours all we see is lots of scenery including porpoises.....and 1 or 2 teeny blue fish.

We then moved over to a reef and I caught an undersized flounder to end the day. As we went back to the dock, we were treated to a nice scenic view at life on the canals!

Nice report. Thursday (June 25) I was out on Chesapeake Bay near Deale on a friend's boat. We were trolling tandem rigged bucktails and had a ray like that hit one of them. It was fun as it put up quite a fight, however it came unhooked at boatside as we tried to get it in the landing net.

Boones trolling birds with a daisey chain rig.

https://www.causewaybaitandtackle.com/uploads/images_versions/5546.jpg

You use a spinning rod and hooked to the bird is a three hook rig with little skirts on micro steel leadered hooks.

I can not find a pic of the rig.

He had them but we didn't use them....there was little bait chasin' activity near the beach but lots of porpoises frolicking around.
