Paul Naj is also a guy that knows a fair amount about this body of water. When I fished here, the bass were on the rocks and hitting crayfish imitations (fat ika, tubes), but BD is pretty well known for destroying patterns! A pattern that will produce a 20+ lbs. limit one day could get you skunked the very next. At least that's what I've seen.. Plan B was the exception. Seemed to catch fish any/every day.

Thanks for the compliment Andrew but your assessment is right on the money. That place can humble you in a hurry. I've had days where you're getting bites with some regularity and the wind picks up by 3 or 4 mph and it just plain shuts down. I'm pretty good finding the fish when they're up against shoreline structure and cover and when they are in their deeper summer haunts. What's been frustrating me is the transition spots.
BDC is very interesting. It's not a big lake like Smith Mountain or Lake Anna which have true bays and coves with main points and secondary points, etc. I grew up fishing those types of waters in NJ, NY and CT. It also fishes larger than many of the smaller lakes because it does have creek channels and deeper water humps and points. I'm sure I'm over thinking it but pre-spawn always meant that the fish would transition out of the main lake into the bays and coves onto ledges and secondary points and stage there. Then throughout the day they would head to and from nearby shallow areas along the bank and in spawning areas to feed heavily prior to spawning. So you would hit a shallow area hard and pretty fast and if you didn't find fish you'd stop at a ledge or point on the way to the next shallow structure. Somewhere on that cycle you would find fish. I have yet to figure out where they are staging for any of the coves on BDC. I marked some fish on the point exiting the right side of the cove near the church and along the old roadbed but haven't gotten them to eat. They could be bluegills or crappie for all I know. The other thing that's foreign to me is the lack of weed beds and vegetation like lily pads, millfoil and hydrilla and wooden structure like docks and laydowns.
The good news is that I rarely get skunked although it happened as recent as last Thursday. And because of the humbling factor it drives me to want to fish it more so that I can hone my skills even better. I also know it's a place that I will eventually catch my personal best and break 8 pounds and would not be surprised if there's a few over 10 in there.
Schedule permitting I'll see you guys on the 17th.

Bummer Rob. Have your wife rent (or maybe you own it already) a copy of "Bigmouth" for you to watch, drool over, and then maybe cry a little.

Rob, that sucks. How long until you can fish again?

That sucks Rob! Get better soon.
On another note it looks like I won't be able to make it to the Beaverdam derby. I promised my kids a camping trip in May and that's the only available weekend.

Get well soon Rob!
I'll be sportin' my new hobie revolution hopefully by then!

Looks like I'm back in. Camping trip has been postponed.

So.... Is this still going to happen?
How's the injury Rob?

I'm still up for it! I've had it down on the calendar for a while now so the gf can't complain

I might be able to come. I need to see if my boat will fit in my van and then I might get myself a trolling motor. Otherwise, I will probably need to ride along with one of you guys or in a spare boat.

Rob, how the heck are ya? Is the foot still too bad to fish?

I still have the canoe and 1 yak available. I supply the boat and paddles....you supply life jacket and fishing gear.

Unfortunately I'll be in NJ this weekend. Have a great time.

Ernie, I am going to see if my little jon boat will fit in or on top of my van tonight. If it does, I am going to try to go get a trolling motor and battery sometime this week. If that doesn't work out, I'll have to take you up on either the canoe or the yak. Thanks!

Looks like crappy weather on Sunday. I'm going to skip this one I think.

I can't make it either. I have to go back down to the apartment at school to finish cleaning it out.

I am pretty sure Matt and I will be there!!!
Offline
so who is still going?
Offline
I'll be there if the weather doesn't go ape crazy!
Offline
So did anyone go?
I'll bet it was tough out there with that north wind blowing down the lake.

Matt and I went, but we could barely make it out from the dock with the huge current. There were even white caps! So we loaded up and fished cedar and caught a good amount of fish...
