Swimmer Presumed Drowned down from Great Falls June 14th

I don't understand why people would risk their lives like.  Why didn't the friends/family stop them?!?  There were reportedly ~45 people in the search and rescue.

3 adults.  One very small dingy.  One under powered trolling motor.  No registration.  No paddles or oars. Took off from Algonquian and motored down river.  River was up but heading down.

I recommended they go up river first, then if the battery runs out, float down to the dock.

They knew better

Bodies usually end up in the big eddy at Difficult Run

Found one there in the early 90's.  Buddy had an early cell phone and we were able to notify the authorities.  They said that most drowned victims end up in that eddy if they get that far down.

Re: Swimmer Presumed Drowned down from Great Falls June 14th

I'm a strong swimmer and been trained for water survival, but I would never assume a river is "safe" to swim with those currents and undercurrents....near the falls, narrow widths.....river rip tides...just everything.  It's a shame this is still happening all over the country really.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Multi-Agency Search Concludes Monday Morning Following Shenandoah River Water Rescue

Front Royal, VA ? At approximately 3:15 PM Sunday afternoon, Warren County Fire and Rescue (WCFR) was dispatched to a reported water rescue on the South Fork of the Shenandoah River in the area of the North Shenandoah Avenue Bridge. Callers reported that two individuals had jumped from a boat into the river and that one of the individuals did not resurface.
Upon arrival, personnel began searching along the shoreline while swift water rescue technicians entered the river a short distance downstream from the victim?s last known location. Additional water rescue resources were deployed to assist with the search.

Following extensive search efforts both along the shoreline and in the water, crews were unable to locate the victim, and rescue operations transitioned to a recovery operation. The Frederick County Sheriff?s Office Dive Team was requested and responded to the scene to conduct underwater searches. As darkness approached, search efforts were temporarily suspended and scheduled to resume at sunrise Monday morning.

Just before 8:00 AM Monday, a Unified Command was established consisting of Warren County Fire and Rescue, Warren County Sheriff?s Office, Frederick County Sheriff?s Office, Virginia State Police, and Virginia Conservation Police. Search and recovery operations resumed shortly thereafter.

At 9:39 AM, the victim was located deceased by emergency personnel.

The scene has since been transferred to law enforcement, who will continue their investigation and provide any additional information as deemed appropriate.

Units on the Run:
Medic 1 (Front Royal)
Rescue Squad 1 (Front Royal)
Boat 100D (Rivermont)
Boat 25 (Strasburg Rescue Squad)
SERV 9 (Toms Brook)
Battalion Chief 1

WCFR reminds residents and visitors that rivers and other natural waterways can present hazards that may not be visible from the surface. Currents, changing water depths, submerged objects, and sudden drop-offs can quickly place even experienced swimmers in danger.

When boating or participating in recreational activities on or near the water, always wear a properly fitted U.S. Coast Guard-approved personal flotation device. Avoid jumping or diving into unfamiliar water, never recreate on the water alone, and remain aware of changing water and weather conditions.

In the event someone becomes distressed or disappears beneath the water, call 9-1-1 immediately and provide dispatchers with the most accurate last-known location possible. Avoid entering the water to attempt a rescue unless properly trained and equipped, as doing so can place additional individuals at risk.

WCFR extends its appreciation to our mutual-aid and law enforcement partners for their prompt response and assistance throughout this incident, as well as to all personnel who operated on scene for their professionalism, dedication, and teamwork.
