From Loudoun County Sheriff's office:
Community Alert: Distraction Thefts Targeting Seniors
We’ve recently responded to several incidents involving thefts targeting older adults in public areas.
In these cases, suspects have approached individuals from the South Asian (Indian) community using cultural pretexts, such as offering a “blessing?? or placing a necklace on the victim, to gain trust and get close. During the interactions, they removed the victim’s jewelry without the victim realizing it until later.
These suspects often work in pairs and may approach on foot or from a vehicle, asking for directions or starting a casual conversation to get close enough to make contact.
What to watch for:
• Strangers approaching you in parking lots or neighborhoods
• Offers of a “blessing,?? gift, or other unexpected gesture
• Attempts to touch you, hug you, or place items on you
How to protect yourself and your loved ones:
• Keep valuables out of sight when possible
• Do not allow strangers to touch you or place items on you
• Keep your distance and walk away if something feels off
Talk with family members—especially older relatives—and share this information within your community.
If you experience or witness suspicious activity, call 911. If the suspects have left, report it to our non-emergency number at 703-777-1021.

There are some Tik Tokers and You Tubers that do this as a kind gesture and then give the hugged person a nice gift. These guys are doing the reverse.![]()
