Our very cold February took its too with this popular fish.
Personally, I'm not a fan of eating it. You have to keep it cold and get it on the grease ASAP.
But, I did not realize that thrower was a commercial fishery for this.

I'm all for the closure. Like you, I don't eat them either. I keep a handful for family and friends every year but other than that I tag and release them all. I tagged 350 last year, this year I doubt I'll hit 100.
I haven't been out for specks since early January before the big freeze. I've heard there were some survivors but no doubt we lost a very large percentage of the population. Hoping there will be a few around the Northern neck to fish for this Summer.
