Been a while since I've thrown the long rod. Started fly fishing (4wt) at 11:15a and had a nice Olive Free Will stogie. Humid but pleasant out.
The Major today was from 1:15-3:15p so I figured they maybe be hungry early. Not!
It was a most frustrating hour of fly fishing. Maybe 2-3 bites and only one average size BG for the time. ![]()
The overgrown shore line growth made it almost impossible to fly cast. But it was still nice trying.

Yep. Days like that are frustrating. But you got out and caught a fish.
Better than my shore outing yesterday. I had 2 swipes at a popper and 2 missed bites with a wacky rigged Yum Dinger. Still, nice to get out and I walked a bit.

What shoreline?
I hiked to the mouth of Sugarland Run with George yesterday and you could almost walk across to the island!

I hiked North instead of South today.
Heard a huge commotion and ran down to the shore line. Not sure what it was, but it looked like some big fish were exploding on a minnow pod. Or a couple otters?
Beautiful day today. Rain in the forecast later today. May turn the fish on in your local ponds?

Just one fish today...maybe 12"?
I got a lot of little bites while I was soaking worms but could not get a hook in 'em. BGs? Turtles?
Saw a hawk of some sort (was skinny) dive and miss a fish. He did circle me for a bi until he went elsewhere.
Today's cigar was so-so. Was given to me by a cheapskate I think! ![]()

Took the kids and fished Cedar on Sunday. Grabbed a bunch of lantern flies to try as bait. Zippy, zero and nada on the lantern flies. With worms they were doing ok. A single bass, crappie, and a bluegill on artificials...
Really hope something decides to start eating the lantern flies.

I saw lantern flies being gobbled up by bluegills at Occoquan Reservoir a few weeks ago. Maybe they are sick of them by now. I am surprised we have not heard more about them recently because they seem to be all over the place. Did you keep them on the surface or under the water?

SLF's are not going anywhere. But koi like them and we have them at Cedar. Robins and Cardinals like to eat them too so we have plenty of them around to help keep them in check.
Ashburn Village has a volunteer team (AVIRT) that goes out and tries to find the egg masses to eradicate them . They are also taking down invasive trees and bushes that might attract the little fellas.
Remember the stinkbug invasion?

I've seen bats, birds and lizards gobble down lantern flies.

About 15" or so under a bobber. At the same depth worms were getting destroyed.
