An appreciation of what we have...a little dose of reality!
My mom, who is 96, found this article that I sent to her 32 years ago. It's sobering reminder of how fortunate we are to live in the US of A. Never take what we have here for granted...
Only two corrections to the article below: 1. In the pic, it's David (6) and Brett (20 mo.). 2. The airplanes were French Mirage F1's. The F-16's escorted the flights out of Caracas in the following days after the coup attempt.
Time to go fishin' again!

Wow!
What an inspirational story. Your family is so resilient. So many young Americans take everything for granted, they don't know how fortunate they are to live in this country. Personally I would never want to live anywhere else.

Scary times
I've had a few tense moments traveling through El Salvadore & Eastern Germany. Kissed the ground each time I deplaned on US soil

Same here. I had a chance to move to Venezuela and work with my dad when he first went down there in 1972 (we had been in the US since 1960). I had to tell him no. The reason was that I had already left one country seeking freedom and didn't want to do it again. Turned out that that I was right because Venezuela did end up failing and is now under a communist dictator.

I did the same when I landed in Miami. Then I connected to go back to Dulles. I was a happy camper then!

It's unfortunate so many Americans have no clue about how fortunate they are, not just the young people. If you've ever been in a failed state you know how bad it can get. But there are plenty of great countries out there that are equal to the US.....the only difference is we are the best of them all in many ways (in some ways the worst too).
