When I fished on my boat with Roney a couple of weeks back, we talked about fishing with CT Campbell and he was all in. We were supposed to fish yesterday but the wet chilly weather made me change it for today.
On the way down, I had told him that fishing could be tough but that CT is a great guy and that he would work on trying to find them.
Our drive from NoVA was a bit on the foggy side but we made it to No. Luray and met up with CT at 8:30a. The ramp (primitive and private) was just a few minutes away.
The dirt road leading to the home made rocky ramp was bumpy and then I saw this!
We made it just fine and dropped the boat in the water in about 4" of water.
I think Roney was ready to roll!
Since we really couldn't float the entire stretch of this float (normally @8 miles), CT rowed up river making a few stops here and there. Of course, the water was low and clear but there were a bijillion ledges (and deep holes) to throw at.
Fishing was slow at 1st but they turned on around 11:15a until about 2p.
Here are some of the fishies...
BTW, I caught a total of 6 Long Ear BG's. I dubbed myself the BG King for the day! After a while, I stopped setting the hook when they nipped at me. It's unreal that we could catch them using a 2/0 hook. They helped get our total up over 15 fish.
Roney caught the biggest smallie at 16"!
A very fat and healthy fish.
While these were not too much of a PIA, they were a factor at times.
Our line would touch one and it felt like a tap and we would set the hook. We had lots of other (non BGs) taps as well and saw a few fish cruising. But, as always, once they saw us they wanted no part of us. We also saw some big schools of carp and channel cats.
Hard to beat the scenery...
At the end of our trip, we were both satisfied that we gave it all we had. Roney now wants to come back and do a full float with CT. I know a guy that will be more than happy to accompany him.
In my opinion, the fish are not yet to their deep winter holes. Most of the fish were caught on top of or just next to a ledge.
Fun day for sure!

Great report! The scenery and fish were beautiful. Great way to spend a Fall day.

Glad you guys had a good time and were able to catch a few, even with difficult water conditions. Roney and I fish together frequently, and he is a great partner on the water.

Bruce- next time you talk to Roney, ask him about the Legend of Luray.
