Got on the Morning Star headboat out of OC on Friday. The ride to our first stop was over 3 hours long. That spot was almost all dogfish so Monty pulled the anchor after about 15 minutes and then we steamed another 40 minutes to our next spot.
That spot was a winner and keeper sea bass started coming up right away. A few of us stuck to jigging but most of the boat used the standard 2 hook bottom rig with bait. I think both worked equally well but the jigs caught slightly bigger sea bass and a lot more bluefish. I used butterfly jigs and Lucanus jigs while others used diamond jigs, all caught lots of fish.
I eventually got my limit of c-bass and also kept a 10lb blue for the smoker. I think that blue was the biggest fish on the boat, but only sea bass count for the pool.
Because of the long run out, I think we only had around 4 hours of fishing time. The ride home was almost that long! Fun trip though.
On Saturday morning I hit Indian River Inlet to check on the tautog bite. I caught 7 or 8 tog up to 15+" but no keepers. Headed home at 11:30.
