kayak repair

Has anyone tried any "welding" on their kayak to fix a hole? Long story short, I had a rod in one of the recessed rod holders behind the seat and on my back cast the lure caught the rod pulled the rivets for the holder out of the boat. The issue is now the hole is a little too big for the rivet to grab. I found this youtube, just curious what the results have been before I try this.

You can use a heat gun to add plastic in but if it is just a stretched out hole I would recommend switching to bolts with lock nuts and a fender washer underneath. Use Stainless Steel hardware and goop and it will be as good as new.

+1 for Redfish response

As an alternative, you could just drill the hole out for the next size pop rivet.

Re: kayak repair

Thanks for the advice. I am just looking to fill in the old holes, rotate the rod holder slightly then drill new ones and go to screws, bolts and washers vs the rivets. Since the filled holes will still be under the holder, it doesn't have to be pretty, I just want them filled in for structure when I drill the new ones.

Re: kayak repair

Don't know if you did, but this is why I save all shavings and plugs from drilling holes in the yak. I have a small container of green and yellow poly scraps if you come up short.

Re: kayak repair

I've done allot of plastic welding - make sure when you heat the plastic its only hot enough to turn it into jello, but not hot enough to burn it.  It'll be a mess.

Then I use an old spoon to 'iron' the plastic on to the holes.

I was going to buy a plastic welder until I found out an alcohol burner & an old table spoon does it.

Drill your new holes far enough from the filled ones because heat with weaken the structure.  Also if you cant get to the area of the hole to put a screw, use the rivets KBF or Austin Kayak sells.
