Indian River Bay / Inlet DE

I'm headed that way tonight with my kayak - staying right next to Holts Landing State Park. Anyone have experience here ... places to hit and what to use? I've never fished the area and am bringing both fly and spin tackle.

Re: Indian River Bay / Inlet DE

There should be blues and shad running into the inlet on the incoming tides. You can catch them on gotcha plugs, small bucktails, spoons, and if you have room you can use fly gear. There are still stripers around too, but if you want keepers, you should go at night. 5-6" swimshads or live eels are probably the best bet for larger stripers right now.  Either side of the inlet can be good, but I prefer the North side.

If I want to use the kayak, I usually head up Rt. 1 and launch at Cape Henlopen to fish around the piers, the ferry jetty, and the inner wall. You can certainly launch and fish the Indian River Bay, but there is a lot of boat traffic in there on the weekends.

Roosevelt inlet in Lewes is another good spot for flounder, blues, shad, small stripers, and croaker. You can fish from the rocks or from a kayak. Gulp or plastics on a 1/4-1/2 oz jighead work great for flounder. Shad and blues can be caught readily on tandem 1/8oz jigs.

The Cape Henlopen pier is good for flounder, spot, bluefish, and croaker, but it gets very crowded on the planks this time of year.

The surf should also be full of kingfish, spot, and croaker by now, and of course the ubiquitous skates.

i know some guys that fly fish for big flatties at the Cape...certain tides. Some small sharks roam around as well.
