Info on Brunswick to POR float

My wife and I locked our bikes at POR, MD side, and took our yak up to Brunswick. There are two launch sites.
One under the bridge and one at the campground. We got the last parking spot under the bridge.

It takes about 1 hour 20min to float to Lander. Double that if you are fishing. Triple if you are fishing hard.

It's another 1hr 10 min back to POR.

Locked up the yak and got on the bikes.

It is a 30-35 min easy bike ride back to Brunswick and the car. My bike computer said 9 miles, but I don't think I have the wheel size set right.

It was a great float and will do it again. The reports from the fisherman I spoke to was that the fishing was good, although I didn't see anyone reel anything in. We drifted by at least a dozen boats in the trip.

Re: Info on Brunswick to POR float

Want to try the float trip since I live close to POR. Two questions: 1) Did it seem safe to leave the yak at POR? 2) Are there any rapids or unsafe areas on the float from Brunswick to POR that a beginning yakker needs to worry about...especially if going alone?
Thanks,
Bruce

Re: Info on Brunswick to POR float

I've known a few to leave their yaks w/o an issue ... not sure if I'd do it because I tend to look for a shuttle partner and leave a car at the take out & put in.

There's some very mild rapids below landers.  Fun in high water, but still beginner stuff.

Check the USGS guages.  4' @ POR and that area becomes pushy for a yak.  Still very fishable, but if you're a newb, I'd choose someplace else.

Re: Info on Brunswick to POR float

My kayak has handles and we locked it through those to the rail right by the ramp. on the weekends there is a lot of activity and someone cutting a chain would definitly draw attention. There was also a park police car there when we got back. I see them there all the time.

The saftey of the river always depends on the gage height and flow. A good summer gage height at POR is 1.5-2ft.Rapids are small then and you could stand up in the river in most places. If it gets real low you need to pick your spot through saw buck carefully or you could hang up on the bottom( that is above Lander). There is a chute on the MD side that the bigger boats use. The fish traps below Lander are the other small set of rapids, again no problem with the right gage height. DO NOT GO OUT IF IT IS 5ft OR ABOVE
