Today I took Jonathan DeHart with me. He has salt in his veins but has very little (if any) fresh water experience. He is also the brother of Bryan DeHart our of the Outer Banks. Bryan does some guiding and I have fished with him a couple of times.

Side story: A few years ago, I was fishing with my oldest son on Capt. Donnie Davis' boat. We were fishing the sound due to weather but were having no luck. Donnie called Bryan who then told us to come to location X. We literally parked right next to him but we are catching nothing while they were catching stripers and flounder. Bryan felt sorry for my son and asked him to hop on his boat and my son proceeded to catch several flatties and a couple of stripers. Donnie and I then caught a few fish but I will never forget what Bryan did.

OK, I met up with Jonathan at 0600 and proceeded on down the road. Low tide was at 0630 so I knew there would be no water where I wanted to go so we headed over to the flats where we caught nothing. So we hauled back to the skinny water and proceeded to try to catch a snakie. They were rumbling in the shallows water and Jonathan could not believe it! But they wanted nothing to do with our offering.

Then, at 0730, I got slammed on a Zoom green/blue paddle tail swim bait and as one can imagine, all hell broke loose! Jonathan got the net and up came this nice 23", 5 pounder!

A couple of knocks on the head with my PW Cannons mini bat and he was out cold and on ice!

We stayed for a long while but nothing else so we decided to float in with the incoming tide. For a long stretch....nada!

We were still having a good time on such a nice day....



...that glow was Jonathan's readiness and exuberance. The boy loves to fish and was learning a new game.

Then, we met up with Gary Hicks but he said the fishing was tough. Yep, we watched many a bass look at our offerings and simply turn away.

Finally, I got hot and landed 6-7 bass in about 45 minutes but none that were picture worthy (except a nice 3 pounded that I set the hook on his tali). Not a legal catch...no picture.

Time started to get away from us so we started back and fished the flats. Jonathan had never used a chatterbait before but started to get the hang of it. Not too many minutes later, I hear "fish on". and Jonathan has his 1stt LMB!

Now it was close to 1 and it was getting crazy with all of the boaters so we went on a sight seeing tour so Jonathan (who just moved up here from VA Beach) could get a lay of the land.

We visited George's house.....



....and his fort!



Great day on the water....I think Jonathan likes fresh water fishing!! I am waiting to hear how diner was......
