im looking for a good spinning combo im looking at the st Croix Legend Tournament spinning rod but i need a good reel looking to spend under 400 for both

Matt,

Do you homework on this! That Legend Tournament is top of the line, probable should natch it with a Stradic 2500. What length rod are you getting? Do you know the model #?

Also, I will be getting my custom rod from L1Ranger very soon. take a look at that before you make a decision. You can have exactly what you want (better blanks, guides etc).

With some patience, you can find these discounted. Come talk to me next time you come over to visit Brett.

i will do that im getting money back from taxes so i decided to drop some on a rod. The model is LTB68MXF and its 6foot 8 inches medium power. I was also looking at the Stradic 2500 but couldn't decide between that and the quantum TE30 or the energy.

Also i was wondering if you thought Dicks would order the rod seeing as they don't have one in stock so that i could see if i liked it first.

Dick's might order it and let you try it out 1st. Make sure you have a discount coupon. You should never pay full retail!

I use Okuma Epixor spinning reels (I have 6-7 of them) and at $45, they are hard to beat. They have 10 ball Bearings and they are very smooth.

bigfoot - before you order - take a look at the rod ernies getting from me

its a 6'8" XFast rod rated for 6 to 15 lb line and 3/16 to 5/8 oz. built on a batson ISB802.75 blank,

its a sweet rod and I got one in the wings waiting to build for myself.

I'd be happy to do another one for you.

Ernie - i was hoping to have the rod done this weekend, but its probably going to be next week before its done. the devil is in the details and as with anything. She needs a coat of finish, a wrap, and two more coats and a butt cap and done.

He is building me my smallie spinning rod but baitcasting is what I really like so that will be the next project.

Josh (L1Ranger) lives on the Shenandoah (below Front Royal) so you can go do a float and look at what he does.

Trust me, everyone will know when I get mine!

BTW, DoahRat (member) has seen it and he said it looked and felt great!!

custom made, I did my first from a kit, and then it was all in from there. I lean more towards performance with an eye for aesthetics, but a pretty rod doesn't mean much to most of us if it won't do the job. Of course, a little special touch here and there to draw attention is a good thing.

ahhh, the infamous price question. really depends on what you want.

blanks run from dirt cheap to 200 plus. you generally get what you pay for, unless you find a sale or closeout, and some are overpriced. the batson RX7 line is a good rod and runs in the 50 to 90 dollar range

guides vary as well. for a spinning set up, you're probably looking at 20 to 60, or more if you want more

reel seats will run from 5 to 25 or more - of course, a TN handle is also an option as well, which cuts out hte reel seat, but ups the cost of handle materials.

cork grips will run from 2 to 6 bucks per inch, of course, there are different woods that can be used, or light weight foam with custom finishes, graphite or texalium tubing

Most of my rods that I've built for myself have fallen into the 150 to 200 dollar range for parts, but IMO, life's to short to fish with ugly stiks

couple more things, I've got a bulk supply of "micro" guides - that are smaller rings than your average running guides. I got bulk price on them and think they are the cat's pajamas when it comes to fishing guides. they are essentially 1/5 the weight of a normal running guide, so some pretty good weight is saved near the tip of the rod, where weight is of the essence to increase sensitivity.

also, a good rod builder can take a mediocre blank and make it better than a factory based on several things such as guide spacing, better quality guides, lighter weight (increased sensitvity), a grip that you like, any color threads and wraps that you want. marbling, whatever type of grip YOU want. The rod is fit to the reel you plan on using on it, and the type of fishing you plan to do.

and if you do want one, i hope you're not in a hurry. it usually takes a few weeks to complete one after the parts are delivered, but I am a little backed up just now and don't wanna rush anything

Matt will have to have patience or go to the store and buy one. I told him to contact you because you could build him whatever he wanted. He was specific about handle etc.

I have a good friend who builds fly rods and he says the same thing about guide spacing....makes a HUGE difference.

My friends dad owns i guess rents a lot down on the shenandoah around Front royal which i belive opens up sometime late this month i cant wait to fish it and hopefully with a new pole. what would be the price for guides and grip and everything for a RX8+S822.5 with a split grip with no fore grip for a spinning rod cost?

but for starters, if i was building the RX8+ for myself, it would run about 225 to 300, depending on guides, reel seat. if i was going to spend the money on the RX8+ and wanted the best, I'd got for the best all around, guides, reelseats, etc. you could shave some $$ here and there and still have a fantastic rod though.
