I spent yesterday morning playing with some wild trout in the mountains. The scenery was great and the weather was perfect. Not sure why I don't go up more often since it's only about 40 minutes away.
Enjoy.

Wow! What a gorgeous day to be out. Beautiful fish and scenery. My wife and I just drove Skyline Drive last week. Autumn is great this year. Which stream were you on and how far a walk?

I love fall Brookies! I drove down to Blacksburg over the weekend for the football game and had a strong urge to break out the fly rod. I miss fall trout fishing, rockfish have ruined me!
Great pictures by the way! Do you know if you have to have a trout stamp or national forrest stamp? I know it is C&R, but I never know in this state.

I caught a couple of (my 1st) native brookies in VT a couple of years back. I had no idea what I was doing but was clued in by the warden after he checked my papers. It was on a 4 wt and was cool!

I'd rather not say exactly which stream, but Camp Hoover is nearby (hint hint). The road runs right along the river, so you don't have to walk much if you don't want to. A truck with good ground clearance is necessary, because the road is in very poor shape in many places. There are big dips and jagged rocks all over the place.
Redfish, most of the area I fished was inside the National Park so the Forest stamp was necessary. The stream does run outside of the park in some places though. You don't need a trout stamp but you do need a freshwater fishing license.
I don't fly fish, so I modified some #1 Panther Martin spinners with a single dressed hook, and tied up some 1/64oz hair and feather jigs and fished them on ultralight spinning gear with 2lb test. The trout were feisty and I caught a bunch of them.

Good point on the location. I wasn't thinking. The pics looked so good, I just thought...I gotta go there!!

Thanks for the intel Bryan! I'll have to check the park out one of these days, I've never been.
I'm hoping to get a chance to head to Stone Mountain state park in NC this fall. They have some massive delayed harvest fish as well as a decent population of wild and native fish. I think there are over 12 streams so always somewhere to go.

Ernie, there are things back there that could eat you!

That is a nice little camp setup they have. Do those cabins have electricity?

They do have electricity, hot water and wood stoves. Oh yeah and lots of mice.
But really very nice, it is where President Hoovers cabinet members stayed when he was hiding out at camp Hoover.

From Murray's fly shop regarding mountain trout.
The Brook Trout are spawning right now and their eggs will not hatch until early March. Please leave these fish alone until March. Many of these fish spawn in the easiest wading areas of the pool which only increases the odds of us stepping on thier redds.
Just posted so everyone knows, though fall is a beautiful time to be in the mountains.
