9-4-09, Tough fishing on the Chesapeake Bay!

Who would have thunk it? Well, perhaps a high pressure system and a full moon to boot was enough to put down the fish!

Today I was joined by my pastor, Kent Williams....

and his son Gabe.  Check out Kent, he is ready to roll but something was afoul, I wonder.....

This should have been a day of lots of 1sts but we didn't get as many as anticipated. We did go to the bay which was the 1st time for Gabe and  he also caught his 1st striper.

OK, not a keeper but we'll take it! Not too long later, Kent hooked into one and I was thinking that we may have a decent day.....but that was not going to happen.

While I have fished the bay a few times (not a ton), today was baffling. We would see the birds and some breaking fish and as soon as we would get to them, down they went with a locked jaw. OK....time to outsmart them! So we would wait in the spot and then the fish would come up just enough time for us to cast and catch nothing!!

Gabe did hook in to two nicer fish but as luck would have it, they both got off. One of them took him for a ride under the boat....lots of fun but no dice!

In total, we hooked in to about ten fish but managed to land only 4 stripers. Two of those were on top water at 2 PM. I caught both of these but credit goes to Capt. Sean Crawford who told me to throw a top water as soon as the fish went down. He summized that one or two of them might come up for the stray. Sure enough, his advise worked.

You know, it's tough to e superstitious around a pastor. And frankly, I don't buy into all of that voodoo anyway except when it comes to fishing. I know many a captain that will hut one of their customers if they bring a banana on board. And guess what?

Kent did me in!! Gabe showed me what Kent had brought and had stashed in the cooler. You have got to be kidding me!!!!  When we got back to the ramp, I told Kent to tell the fella that was launching his boat about the banana. From 30 yards we heard the guy hollering at Kent! Then, he turned to me and gave me the thumbs down sign...as in "you need to kick this guy's behind!".

Anyway, even though the fishing was very slow, we had a great day with lots of chatter and laughter!

Time to go fishin' again!

Nice healthy looking fish.

To bad about the banana. It looks like it had a bad day.
