Bellhaven Marina Report - 082909

I met a buddy at his place in Falls Church, the same buddy that landed the big German Carp in Beech this summer, because he wanted to go fish Daingerfiled Sailing Marina. Unfortunately for him, it requires a D.C. license and he did not have one. I then suggested that we head down the street to Bellhaven Marina where we could even rent a small boat. It worked out, we rented a canoe and the fishing was on.

Brent got into the first fish and surprisingly enough, it was smallie!

The then got into a healthy LMB that probably pushed 1.5lbs.

God forbid that I let a Kansas boy beat this city slicker in a an emerging fishing competition. In fact, he was talking so much smack, that I had to lay it down with my first catch of the day...

All joking aside, I showed my true colors by tying the score with this nice 2lb 3oz LMB.

With the score tied, we headed to the other bank after noticing some jumping fish. Brent hooked into something only to get the slack knocked into his line. Not more than 2 seconds later, fish on for me. The last and deciding fish was another smallie.

I have never caught smallies this far south in the Potomac, but it provided some nice action.

We fished the last two hours of the incoming tied when the fish bit our lures. Good times, a little tan, and tight lines!

If it were easy, they'd call it catching!

Mike Iconelli(sp?) caught a limit of smallies on his TV show a year or two back. They were caught just above you in some moving water (discharge).

Looks like you guys did just fine!

IIRC, it was ~ $40 for a jon boat or a canoe when we went.  We got the jon and used our own TM and portable sonar.  No complaints, but, the marina hours were not my first choice for fishing this time of year (i don't think they opened 'til 9AM).  That is a minor niggle, however.

If I'm way off base w/ the price and hours, by all means correct me.

Well now I wish I had a trolling motor...Maybe I'll just try a canoe. Is there good fishing in the area?

Dan- it will cost you less to drive over and borrow my canoe. I have some roof foam, you may be able to carry it on your car. Next time you are in the area, try it out.

The canoe rental runs like this:
2 hours - $20
3 hours - $25
4 hours - $30
etc.
They offer no motors on any rentals, which is fine because fishing in Bellhaven is good.
