8-15-09, Wicomico River report

We couldn't go rayin' (Jeff's bow was broken) but we went slayin' instead!

I will give you the totals now.....the crew of Jeff English, Jimmy Rekas and me caught a total of 158 fish!

9 stripers to 23" (2 of them) of which 6 were keepers!
1 small croaker
1 flounder (13")
147 white perch to 10.5"! We kept 10 that we over 9"!

It all started with a wake up call of 3:30 AM. I picked Jeff up at 4:00 AM and Jimmy at 4:10 AM. We were in Chaptico by 5:40 AM (for home made sammiches and bread puddin') and on the water just before 6 AM. Today was going to be about chapters (like a book). I was going to try 6-7 different locations using different methods of fishing.

Chapter 1

We were going to fish the shallows of the Wicomico River. What transpired 500 yards from the shore and in a 25 minute time period was worth the long ride down there.

All three of our rods were rigged up with top water baits. I was throwing a baitcaster with a Stillwater Smack it! Jeff was throwing a spin caster with a Sebile Slasher 90 and Jimmy was rigged up with a Storm Chug Bug on a spin caster.

It didn't take long for Jeff to get hooked up with a shortie.....

.....perhaps the bog ones were not to be had today!!

WRONG!!

All of the sudden Jimmy hollers out "fish on!" and so does Jeff. They are both fighting nice keepers as I was trying to coax their cousin to hit me.

Well....he did....3 times before he got on. This was right in front of Jeff and he saw the fish's 3 tries. But three was good because all 3 of us were hooked up with fat keepers. BTW, this was Jimmy's 1st ever striper on top water! See below!

A few minutes later, a huge explosion comes out of the water and Jeff is fighting a nice, fat 23 incher!

All of this happened before the sun came up at 6:21 AM. Once the sun showed his face, the bite went away and we moved on to.....

Chapetr 2

We motored up to St. Margaret's Island to see if any stripers were hanging around the eddy that was being created by the tide on the Wicomico side of the island. We made three passes and nada!

Chapter 3

Now we moved to the mouth of the river to fish for stripers on "poop rocks". The current was pretty swift but we got no love there so we moved on.

Chapter 4

Now it's time to fish for white perch. We went to Swan Point and started to make some nice drifts across the bar. We slammed the white perch. The 1s 4 drifts yielded, 19, 14, 24 and 14 perch! Jeff is now a believer.....he did great (64 WP + 1 flounder)! we then moved down to the east side of the point and picked up another dozen of so WP. We decided to move on even though the perch were biting.

Chapter 5

I have only fished Lower Cedar Point once below a few years ago where Jimmy and I found breaking blues for about 2 hours. But it was not to be this year....except that as we were looking for any sign of life, Jeff nailed this 20 incher!

We also caught quite a few WP in this spot.

Chapter 6

We tried jigging in deep water when we found some marks but it was not meant to be

Chapter 4 (repeat)

We decided to hit Swan Point on the way back since we had so much success before on a rising tide. We did just as well on a falling tide even though we made only 2 drifts.

Some highlights.....Jimmy with a decent perch.

Ernie with a decent perch!

And of course...Jimmy reeling a fish all the way up to the rod tip....priceless!

I then got a nice hit on my UL and a fight ensued. Jeff kept coaching me to slow it down and not horse it. This nice almost keeper was the reward.

Chapter 7

We tried the creek that is right next to where we started and we caught a few more WP to round out the numbers. But in reality, we were done.

What a great day! We were back on the road by 2:00 PM and we capped off the great day with a stop at T & J BBQ in La Plata. Their food is outstanding and was today's fishing expedition!!

An absolutely perfect way to spend a day. Those are the days we dream about all winter long.

For the record, Jeff caught the one flounder as well as 64 of the white perch. He scorched us!

Oh....he also caught 5 of the 9 stripers. What a day he had!
