7-31-09, Cuckold Creek MD report

I met Carl in Fairfax at 0400 and we got on the road at 0420. We were on the water just after 0600 but not after suffering through a couple of embarrassing mishaps.

We put in at Clarke's Landing which was a new area for us, plus it looked like it would protect us a bit from the wind which was forcasted to be gusty with the storms rolling through the area.

To say that the fishing was slow at first is an understatement. As always, Carl and I were after white perch and anything else that might be attracted to our offerings. Apparently, no one told the fish we were coming. Finally, after an hour or so, Carl caught this blue fish.

Can you actually see it? Anyway, things progressed and we started to catch a few more teeny blues......

...don't ever get your fingers close to these guys, small or big! We also managed a few croakers.

It was not until close to the 3rd hour that we caught our 1st white perch. We worked our tails off to catch what we did. The perch were under the docks so we had to make accurate cats....and when we didn't...lost lure! I even jigged a couple up from the pilings!! As always, Carl and I kept score and after the 1st game, he led 15-13.

Oh...I almost forgot, I caught the biggest white perch I have ever caught...12-5+ inches!!!!

I was using a 1" Bass Assassin and as soon as I got him (after I thought I was snagged) I knew I had a nice one on. When I saw him, I told Carl (very sternly), to "get the net". But Carl was just standing there staring at the monster so I had to tell him again!. He helped me land it and it was a great way to end the day. Certainly much better than this guy!

Carl was getting tired so at 1130, we left....here is a picture of the ramp, not one of the best, by the way.

As we drove back, Carl mentioned that there was another ramp close by and that we should look at it since we struggled with this one. OK...let's check it out! We found it, and the next thing I know, we are launching again! Game 2 of the double header!

The idea was to fish for 30 minutes. We did so without catching one fish! So....I stretched the time and Carl started to catch a few and started to pull away from me in the catching game. Right before we quit for the 2nd time, I found a small school and proceeded to catch a few more. We caught 12 perch in the last 30 minutes or so. What a way to end the day.

To make a long story short, at the end of the day Carl out fished me 21-19. Now we are both tired.

Back at the ranch, we took a picture of the 12+ incher along side a 9 incher which is a normal keeper.

Holy Cow!

On the way home, the storms came and Carl got his boat washed....another great day with Carl!

Nice white perch, that sounds like fun.  I think you guys like fishing.  Can't wait to get back out there.

Ernie, you told it like it happened. It was a fun day and like you said on the way back "We made wine out of grapes". That wind, that we had to deal with, probably kept us cool enough to do the round #2 segment of our venture. The new ramp we found is definitely a keeper! It is best whether you fish Cuckold Creek or Mo's Cove. After all these years, I'm still trying to determine where the best time happens during the tides. Mo, you will love the new ramp! From the mouth of Cuckold Creek, you look directly across the river at Mo's Cove!

Carl made the right call in going out from the Creek, even if we had to pay 5 bucks for the lousy ramp (1st ramp). As I understand it, the bay was rough (Gale Warnings, Small Craft Advisories) and I imagine the Pax River was the same.
