I wish....I may not get on a canal this time (too many meetings) but I will do my best to catch a fish.

Oh yeah......pictures later!
I fished Monaco Cove this afternoon (4/23) which is a lake in Miramar where my brother lives. We fished right out of his back yard. The Peacocks, which only feed during sunlight hours, were guarding their young and were not interested in eating.
But...they were interested in chasing away anything that looked like it might attack their offspring. My brother used a red tip/white hair jig (spinning gear) and I used an olive over white clouser (fly gear). The way to catch them was to set the hook as soon as you saw them attack! Pure sight fishing! He scored 1st with a nice Butterfly Peacock and then I landed a fat Mayan Cichlid that was a great fight on my 7wt fly rod.
We saw the smaller Mayan Cichlids hanging around but I have always heard that they are almost impossible to catch. Well....almost impossible because I somehow managed to get one on the fly. He must have attacked that coluser 10-12 times before I finally got him. Nice fight too!
I wanted a Peacock in the worst way so I kept throwing the fly until big momma took it and took me for a ride! I now know what it's like to have a freshwater fish take me to the reel! What a fight! It even included several accorbatic jumps before I finally subdued her enough so I could land her and get a couple of shots!
Later, my brother was able to entice (aggravate?) a Mayan Cichlid!
This was an unexpected bonus as I really did not think we would get any fish in my brother's lake. Interestingly, we did not catch any largemouth bass.
So the tally for the late PM was a 4+ pound Peacock, a 3+ pound Peacock, a nice Mayan Cichlid and two smaller Mayan Cichlids!

I found the canals that I fish with Capt. Mark Hall when I come to Miami. I walked the banks for almost 2 hours and never saw a Peacock. I saw some Midas Cichlids (they look like goldfish) but they were not interested in my clousers.
Capt. Mark knows how to find them which why I like to hire him.
The wind was blowing +25 the whole time but it was still worth it to try to hunt them down!
Maybe next time.....

Here are the pictures from Thursday the 23rd....
First, my brother's dog gets loose and is having a hay day chasing ducks....feathers flying all over the place!
My brother Pete's 1st Peacock Bass....I had to help him hold it since he does not fish and didn't want to lip it!
I believe this next one is an adult male Mayan Cichlid....
And the next two are your traditional Mayan Cichlids. They fight hard but are tough to catch!
Now the battle is on! I have hooked a nice Peaxock Bass on a 7 wt fly rod!
What a thrill!!
One more picture for the fun of it!
I may be going to visit my brother more often!!
