4-22-24, "O"

That song was in my head today.

I didn't know what to expect today as the numbers have been waning but we had to give it a go.

Bob and I met at the "O" ramp at 7:15a. It was 39dF! mad

Saw Capt. Rich Johnson of Osprey Charters but he was going to after bass 1st and then maybe some afternoon shad.

Water temp when we started was still at 58dF and topped out a little over 60dF. Perfect water temps for them.

As I almost always do, I headed up top and caught one fairly quickly. No pic of that one but got another fairly quickly.

I did manage 10 more up there and Bob got a few.

Some of them were herring.

I froze for the 1st hour or so!

So we dropped down and it was a bit slow for a while.

Finally, we went to Bob's spot and I think we got around 20 or so there.

They were down deeper (but would cone up to hit the spoon or dart) when the sun was up (and warmed us up a bit).

I managed a double and I think we each had 2 in a row once. The bite was definitely slow although we had a few mini flurries. Biggest fish was 17.5".

There were 3-4 shore shad fishers but I never saw them catch one. There was also another boat who spent a ton of time trolling. They only caught a few.

At the end, we ended with 55 fish which was a bit more than what I anticipated. Maybe we'll get a cloudy day for the next trip (Monday).

The wind was a non factor for most of the day but we did get 4-5 gusts which concerned us but nothing ever materialized. I think the air temp was around 61dF when we took out.

Lunch at Brickmaker's was great, as always. We both had burgers.

I want everyone to know that if I hadn't contributed my 17 hard earned fish, we wouldn't have reached that 55 total. Cigars weren't the only thing Ernie smoked today. Nice day on the water trying to catch some shad.

To be honest, I'd be just as happy catching 5 as much as 50.  You know it's a good day when the stogie comes out!

Yesterday, I mentioned to Bob that we make the same amount of casts whether we catch them or not. It's rhythmic and relaxing (but hands to cramp up at times). The anticipation of the hit is the rush. And we are getting good at shaking them off after they make a jump by the boat. Some of yesterday's shad reminded me of mini tarpons.

We've been there for the start of the run (caught 1 fish) and the end (caught less than 10). And we've been there when they are thick. It's always good. Except the cold starts! lol

I'm starting to see how physical limitations can affect the day ernie.....my hands tend to cramp also a little now.  But, it's due to the cholesterol medication I take I'm told.  Need to be healthy in order to live a healthy life!

Too damned hungry to take pics. Didn't have breakfast, and that's why my catching was off. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. :-)
