Little largemouth fun

Let me start with saying that if you're chasing largemouth in spring, throw whatever color you want as long as it's red 😉

With rivers still a touch too high for the kayak, did a solo outing for some largemouth yesterday not on the river.  First time out in the commander this year so got to stand a fish.

Actually got a hit on first cast with jig and craw in a usual spot. However a tad rusty on hookset because even though it was swimming off with it, didn't get it hooked.  So proceeded to move around focusing on steep banks with wood.  Didn't anything till I got towards the back of an area and a 13-14" grabbed the red rattle trap.

Then went to another cove and got one to slam a red chatterbait with red keitech swimbait trailer.  Entire lure in its mouth, an indication of what was to come.  That fish was in about two and a half feet of water and had little mud on his belly when I landed it. Got another one leaving the cove a similar size that also inhaled the lure

Moved around and fished a shallow hard bottom flat with some diva water nearby because my previous fish we're all shallow and that bottom would have started to warm up a little bit with the morning. Getting warmer yesterday. I was setting shallow and throwing over the deeper edge and when the lure got about 2 ft from the kayak at the edge of that flat the rod bent and all I felt was weights. After a few anxious minutes, this absolute tank of a large mouth was in the net. As you can see in the picture again, the lure was completely inhaled. And I got the tryout the new scale I got for a Christmas gifts

Yep, prefer brown to green.

I'll update this post later because went back to same location today.  Fish were still chewing but had heartbreak this time around 😭😭

Re: Little largemouth fun

FRIDAY AFTERNOON UPDATE

After the way Wednesday ended with catching at 19.5 and the river is still a touch high, went back to the same body of water to see if I could continue to have some luck.  I had some good luck and also a bad case of heartbreak.

It was still a case that whatever I was throwing it needed to be red 😉. First stop at a point at a small rocky flat and this nice one was the first fish landed on a red flatside crank

Working along a stretch of riprap along a steep bank alternating between the crank, red chatterbait and red rattle trap gave me another 4-5 bass that were hitting with authority.

Got to the next rocky flat in the same area that gave me the big one from Wednesday and started fan casting the edge of flat/drop with the rattle trap.   I was reeling it in and it just stopped.  Felt the weight when it started bulldogging and actually taking a little drag.  The heavier spinnerbait rod was bent.  I got a glimpse and it was over 20.  But the hooks popped even though I did a fairly good job of keeping line tight.  Had to set back down in the kayak after that and collect myself.  It was an absolute tank.

But I did manage to catch a few more before leaving.  Biggest of the day went almost 18" on the trap on another point close to the same large flat.

Aside from 2 dinks, the rest of the bass were all around this size

Hopefully I'll be back to smallies soon but these last 2 outings has worked out all right 😁

Re: Little largemouth fun

That's a heck of a spot you have, but I hear you on losing that big one.  You still had a great day though!

Re: Little largemouth fun

It's a spot best fished early in the year like this.  But definitely a good day all considered
