Old Cossey Pond in Fredericksburg Feb 29 2023 Leap Year Fishing

So the pond is located in fredericksburg and is considered an urban fishing pond as it's only like 4-5 acres worth.  It's literally among lots of houses and people are walking and exercising everywhere, which makes for nice scenery if I have to be honest.  They stocked it on the 27th and then the weather hit so I decided to give it a go today for 1.5 hours.  It was pressured heavily when I rolled up at 12:30 pm (decided to take a late lunch).  I talked to two older fellas who were polite, but ..... let's just say you can tell they were A holes who were biting their tongue to say something.  One of them did tell me they had only caught one really small one in the past 4 hours.  So I set up caddy corner from them since there really isn't a lot of room at this place.

Went with a carolina rig and a small size 10 hook with a chartreuse power bait egg in garlic.  My go to set up when trout aren't rising.  I cast fairly close and find a stick to rest my rod on and take the tension out of the line with my recycled wine cork painted in red.  15 minutes in and I catch my first one!  30 minutes in after a few successes the old fellas pack up and leave.  They were all on the small side, but I'm not complaining.   I'm not using a different bait from anyone else, but I am being very intentional on how I place the hook, weight size, line size, hook size.

So packed away and in the freeze it goes!

Time for smoked trout dip!

I've fished there many times and it was always crowded. My favorite spot was on the little concrete spillway thing.

Gents! Please do tell how you make your smoked trout dip.

I have fond memories of fishing for trout in New Mexico 40+ years ago with a retired Army General. He made a trout dip that was amazing but I lost the recipe. mad

I don't have a real recipe per se. I just start with a 1:1 ratio of smoked trout flakes to cream cheese and go from there. I've added dill, worcestershire, lemon, salt and pepper, chives, and probably a bunch of other things. Hard to go wrong really.

Since I don't remember correctly, Longball (the retired General), added either Miracle Whip or Whipped Cream to his concoction.

Smoked a bunch up Sunday morning!  I like to use a brine of soy, sugar, honey, salt overnight, light rinse with water, dry for a few hours, smoke at 190 degrees for 3-4 hours with hickory and apple wood.

Now we're talking .....

Trout look good and ready to make the dip

Grandmother use to make a dip for fish or shell fish.  2# Cream Cheese, T mayo, T sour cream, salt & pepper, t lemon juice, old bay, t Worcestershire sauce, sharp cheddar cheese on top. and bake until cheese is bubbly.   Serve with bugle chips.
