9-7-23, Chesapeake Beach

Bob I met up at 6:15am in Centerville before we made the long drive to Chesapeake Beach.

It was nice out, with light winds from the SSE (not my favorite but it will do).

High tide was not until 11a but it was already up!

Our goal today was to fill up Bob's cooler with white perch But we didn't catch a one! mad Not a single one! Nor did we catch a striper, croaker, spot, catfish, bluefish, lizzardfish, ribbonfish or toadfish

We worked that jetty on both sides and we got 6-7 redfish.

At least our skunks were off!!

Then we went to the other jetty and got no love.

Next move was to a rock wall area and bob snagged a couple of peanut bunker.

Things were not looking good.

Bob wanted to go to jet ski house so we headed over there but I made a stop just before at glass house. Here, we caught at least 2-3 dozen red fish!

It was a blast! But...we were after perch so we left them biting.

We hit jet ski house...nothing.

We went another mile north and hit Spanish house...nothing.

I mean nothing like in ZERO perch bites!

We went out a bit at Holland Point and...nothing!

I told Bob that since there the perch seem to be extinct, we should go catch some more reds at glass house!

When we were there earlier, we did the slow, bump the bottom deal (just like white perch fishing) and we did well. This time, they wanted none of that!

Bob discovered that they wanted it off the bottom...just barely moving the bait.

We scored another 2-3 dozen reds!

Plus a speckled trout!

I even caught a few without the spinner, just a jig with Gulp. BTW, Gulp was the ticket!

Unfortunately, we did not get any keepers (must be 18-27") but we had an absolute blast of perch fishing today! lol

Lunch was at Dockside Restaurant. It was good.

I had their version of a Cuban...

...and Bob had a fish basket!

The ride home was uneventful and we missed all of the fireworks!

Boat is now double covered and at the barn.

Man!  Reds and specs!  No white perch?  Looks like a fun day to me.  I have never caught either of those fish.  Glad to hear it was a good day and no drama with the weather.  There's a barn?

That's been a theme for me also, I've caught more baby reds than perch all year. I kind of wonder if the reds didn't push the WP off to new spots.

Good news is all those reds will be slot size next year.

Great report!

Re: 9-7-23, Chesapeake Beach

If it had only been the fishing, the one check would have made the day.

The fun is a given, any day in Ernie's boat is a fun day.

Probably 99.99% of everything we catch is released, and  that was a success. No  damaged fishies this day.
I wanted perch for breakfast. The lack of perch in the cooler meant no fish to clean. also a plus. Besides,  the fish basket lunch will carry me.

Ernie's concern was getting the cover on before we got rain, it was done.

Bottom line, another great day fishing with E.

Re: 9-7-23, Chesapeake Beach

We have never caught this many reds in one day...by a long shot. Usually, we will get 2-3-4, maybe 5.

Still don't know what happened to the perch, we didn't see any dolphins around.

The day was splendid, kinda ranks up at the top. We just could not believe how many reds were available. And on UL tackle to boot!

Re: 9-7-23, Chesapeake Beach

Ernie, I've been struggling to find perch in the shallows too!  We caught just enough on Friday of last week to fillet a few for my brother's buddy who had never tried them, but on Saturday we probably had only 20 total perch in 3 hours and we also picked up 2  baby drum along the way, way up on the Magothy and in Whitehall Bay.  The tides were uncooperative and we fished in midday sun, but still the lack of perch action is a bit bewildering.  Besides the puppy drum, there have been a ton of croaker in many of the northern Chesapeake rivers, so let's hope those guys grow up into hard fighting keepers in the future!

For the 1st time in I don't know how long, I didn't hit Annapolis for perch. The Wicomico was a catching machine but keepers were hard to come by. Lots of fun though. Chesapeake Beach was both a mystery and a surprise.

Re: 9-7-23, Chesapeake Beach

We had similar results way down on the Piankatank. The big perch we normally catch where almost a no show. We did catch about 6 WP in two weeks on med sized spinnerbait and the gold bladed ones caught 6 "in the slot reds". All served up that same night on the half shell.
One pass down perch ally got 14 reds with 3 keepers. Not bad.
