8-11-23, UP

After a breakfast stop at The Filling Co., Greg and I were on the water around 7a.

As we launched, I told Greg that all I was gonna throw today were hard baits. cool I only brought 2 boxes with me.

We tried some top water at 1st and I had a little one hook up for a second but it got off. We got no more sniffs.

So...we went up river and drifted a bit but had no bites.

Water looked good and the temps all day were between 77-79dF. POR level was 1.4-1.5'. Lots of grass around Algonkian and all the way up to the chute.

We made another run and I was able to hook a fish but lost it. Greg got some bites. This was at Walleye hole.

Then, I declared that I was going up river. At 1st, my plan was to hit the fast water up near the top of Harrison. But I bypassed that. Then, I was going to hit an eddy but I bypassed that. I kept going all the way to the mouth of Limestone Creek, a bit above White's Ferry. That's a 12 mile run from the Algonkian ramp!

Here, we saw fish and I was able to finally get the skunk off the boat.

At 11A! mad

We saw fish but they were just not committing. Lots of half hearted follows.

At one point, we had a smallie right by the boat. He took a few sniffs at my bait and Greg dropped his straight down. He mouthed it and started to swim away but when Greg set the hook, gone! It was really frustrating to see fish just toying with us.

I did get a nice one on a jerk bait but he too came off.

Around 11:30a, Greg said he had enough! But I made him wait another 30 minutes but the frustration was a fever pitch by then!

No clue what the deal was...

Around noon, we cleaned up the boat and headed downriver, about a 30 minute run.

There is lots of grass and 3 times I had to stop to let Greg unclog the jet intake.

It was a very pleasant day and the wind that was called for was not a factor. We got sporadic breeze and they were welcome.

As we started to discuss lunch, we thought about eating at the WF Grill since we were right there but Greg wanted to "go to that place in the industrial park". What? Where? After a few questions, we ascertained that he wanted to go to Greek Unique. No problem by me, I love that place. big_smile

Greg had the Parm gyro and I had the Bulgogi gyro.

Excellent end to a frustrating day!

I was tough up river earlier in the week.  Grass makes it tougher.

You got out and that was a plus!

Food looked good too.

Food was great!!

It's always a plus getting out. Plus we learned a few things for future trips up there.

The grass was not the issue with the fishing as there was very little of it where we fished. It was a pain around Algonkian and hard to navigate the jet through it.

I struggled because I was not doing what I usually do. I committed to throw nothing but hard plastic baits the whole time. tongue

There will be a hard bait sale coming soon...lol

Looking at positives
- Food was outstanding
- We found some REALLY fishy spots Ernie hadn't fished much before (can't wait to go back there with higher water)
- We got out on the boat and it was a nice day
- ummmm......no one fell in and the boat didn't sink!

You broke Rule #1 - Let the fish tell you what they want

Agree if I had all of my stuff with me! But I wanted to try something new...like an experiment.

All positives, but...
Most could have been accomplished with the boat on the trailer in the driveway. big_smile

Oh sure...add insult to injury!

On the way to the ramp, Greg had to hear me b**** about what a PIA it is to get and then put away the boat for each trip. I even offered to sell it to him.  tongue

But, as always, once we launch it...it's all good!

First couple months you'd be happy

Then you'd start missing having a boat

Just like a Jeep, every time someone with a boat passes you, you'll be longingly looking asking what possessed you to sell it.

I get it.  When I wrecked my Jeep, I did that for 10 years until I got another one.  And I'm starting to miss my Jon boat even though I didn't use is since 2010.  I'm finding myself searching hog island more and more ....
