First Topwater fish of 2023

I got out early and fished from shore this morning for a couple hours.  Caught a nice one about 16 inches or so on my little popper and realized I left my phone in the car.  Went back and tried a different spot, but no bites.  Went back to first spot and managed 3 more and missed one.  Great fun on a ML setup and 8 pound line.  I saw Ernie go out and work the island downstream.

This one went between 17 and 18 inches as measured against my rod and checked later.

Then caught a couple smaller ones, but still a blast on the little popper.

A Pileated Woodpecker scolded me as I was headed to my first spot and there was a good sized Kingfisher who hunted the section I was in.  Saw a flock of at least 20 Cormorants and about 8 Herons fly upstream when Ernie was heading upriver.  Heard a Turkey out on an island.  Nice morning to be out!

Great job from the shore!

George and I discussed the flock of herons. I believe that the white ones are Great Egrets.

We heard a wood pecker from afar that was attacking a hollow tree!! Sounded like it was right next to us.

Looks like fun.  Old school always works.

Allot of birds and raptors were on the river.  That wood pecker sounded like it was beating a bass drum.  That's the largest flock of Great White Egrets I've ever seen.  See them allot this time of the year hiking the park.

I took this pic on my phone and forgot about it.

Yes!  Those are Egrets.  They seem to stick together more than Herrons.  Great picture!

Well...except 2-3 of them. They (herons and egrets) were all together. And the shot didn't get them all.

Same group I saw.  Came up on the inside of the island and went over there.  Fish eating machines!

That Herron that tried to take my smallie yesterday was huge and aggressive.  He realized the fish was too big to eat.  I would have had a mess on my hands if it got the fish or the lure.

I hooked a pelican once.  Pretty sure you'd have the same problems with a heron.
