4-21-23, "O"

Because of Greg's work schedule, we set our fishing dates way in advance. Today was picked and typically it's right in the middle of the shad run. More on that later.

We splash the boat and when I turned the key...nothing! A quick glance at my toggle switches showed that the bilge pump was on thus it drained the battery. Somehow, when putting it away last, I knocked into it and flipped it on.

A quick walk back to the limo and help was on the way. In a few minutes (took longer to get the hatch open), we started the motor.

This saved the day!

I have one in every car and they are a fantastic tool to have in the arsenal.

The delay set up back a bit and we went up top where Bob was (yes, he was already catching).

Today was a gorgeous day, Greg even came in his flip flops!

Well, the fishing stared slow, stayed slow and ended slow!

But we still got some including a double (pic failed on that one).

I did have something larger cut me off while up top. We even saw a snakie come up and take some air. We also saw a young kid catch one from shore.

At this point, it was around 11a and all we had to show was 10 shad. Bob had a few more and ended around 30. But as Greg said, he was there longer! lol

We went back to the middle and that's when I got my double. And Greg gets another shad quickly and I am up one. He close in and ties me.

By this time, with so many casts yielding little results, I am getting hungry. So I declared that the next fish would decide who the winner of the day was.

Greg's reel starts screaming and this was the result.

Hey...it's pullage!

All three of us ate lunch at Brickmaker's...

...and lamented that maybe the shad run is waning. I don't know but the last 2 trips have been tough. I do know that some numbers have been caught here and there but who knows. I'll be back at it on Monday.

There's no crying with the low numbers. It is what it is. I saw very few other fish caught (except for Bob).

The day was splendid and the conversation was lively. All of it makes for a great day on the water.

You handled the battery issue well.  That cat is why you did not catch as many.  They were all in his belly!  Sorry to hear the shad are waning.  I only went once so far.

Nicely done.  Glad the dead battery didn't ruin the trip

Hope nobody got hurt like the other day.  I get the staples taken out tomorrow.  Nice size cat fish.  What no Carp? Always a great time on Capt. Ernie's boat.

Whoever came up with that battery charger concept deserves to make millions.  Great tool that is actually dependable.  I used one after sitting for almost a year and it worked like a champ.

Any day on the water is a good day, even when the fishing is slow.  A highlight Ernie skipped was running the gauntlet up river while the kids on shore litterally throw their lures 3 ft in front of the boat (and Ernie was being very respectful staying on the other side of the river).

The worst part of the day was watching Bob continuously catching while we trudged along catching one every 30 minutes.  He definitely has them figured out.

Apparently some action at the "O" today!

Do Volvos make good bait?

An eye witness told me that the gentleman "sped up" as he approached the ramp in the Volvo. No trailer. After hitting the water and floating away, a couple of bystanders jumped in and rescued the dog and then the driver.

No clue as to why this happened the way it did.
