4-19-23, a river float

We got a little bit of a late start due to traffic and construction but the anticipation of today's river float was high!

John and I would fish with Travis Edens of Kingfisher Guide Service.

Just being on the river shoreline was peaceful...

It was a chilly start and we were nervous about the wind forecast as it was all over the place. The wind did affect us some but we stuck to the long sticks all day long!

I don't know where the obligatory 1st fish pics went because they ain't in my camera!

But who cares, John and I were already smoking our stogies!

Let's just say up front that the fish were chewing. I could not keep up with the pics. Sometimes, you are running through a chute with a fish on and you better hang on. The camera is the last thing you think of.

So which fly worked best? Yes. All of them!

One of the coolest thing about today (happened 4-5 times) is that as I was working the fly, a fish would start to track it. In the clear water, we could see it all. Sometimes they would smash the fly and sometimes you had to tease them but each time it happened , it was totally visual. What a rush!

We actually lost quite a few fish! It's harder to set the hook in swifter water and they get in it to mess you up! One fish ran under a ledge and we had to work hard to nudge it out.

When they know they are caught and see a ledge nearby, it's like they turn on a turbo boost! Another rush!

We ate some lunch at 2 pm. Subs from the Italian Store. They were inhaled as we did not realize what time it was since we were so busy catching!

Then it happened. John made a short cats and out pf no where, a beast lunged at his fly. John had just used his 6 wt (we both used a 7wt most of the time) and had a big fish on. The fight was epic but John won and the fish was landed. This was a FAT almost 20"er! It weighed just over 4.5lbs.

It was the only fish we would measure.

This part of the river had some fun rapids. travis is an absolute beast handling that big raft down the chutes and drops! Fun to ride! I was holding on too tight to take a pic! But here is what it looked like after.

Here is what's left of one of my flies...

...it used to have eyes! lol

Too many fish caught (and landed) to count.

It was a beautiful day out despite the annoying wind.

Oh...I did catch 2-3 more fish on the spinning rod while Travis was tying on a new leader for me at one point but they didn't count! lol

The river looked great and the smallies cooperated. Many were hiding in the ledges and with the right cast, we would dredge the lure in front of the ledge and see the eat.
Absolutely spectacular!

Time to go fishin' again!

Terrific report. Nothing better than those days when you can watch them bite.
