Fiji

My wife and I keep looking at each other in disbelief that we are actually here. This trip was cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to Covid. Well we finally made it. We landed in Fiji after a 10.5 hour flight from LA and I slept less than 2 hours on the flight and was a zombie. We had one more flight to take to get to our small island and it was in this so it got my adrenaline pumping

I also got to ride shotgun which was amazing. During the 1 hour helicopter ride we went over amazing reefs, surf breaks and massive schools of feeding skipjack, tuna, whales and porpoise.

The island and resort are like a postcard. https://i.imgur.com/jumSRXD.jpg

After a full day of rest, my wife and I did our first fishing trip which was an afternoon half day on the resort’s Mako center console. https://i.imgur.com/e8cQoBz.jpg

It was a beautiful afternoon on the water. We started out trolling some rigged baits and before too long we had our first take. I fought and landed this beautiful barracuda which would be kept for the locals to eat.

After seeing the fight, my wife knew it would be too much for her so she tapped out before she even started. Worried that she would get bored, we changed up and dropped baits in 30 to 40 meters of water and started to catch a bunch of different species including coral trout, snapper, sea bream, longnose emperor, job fish, etc. Here are a few samples.

We brought the sea bream, snapper and job fish back and the chef prepared an amazing dinner the next day that included ceviche in coconut milk, sashimi and pan seared snapper. Dinner was amazing!

The setting for dinner was quite amazing. https://i.imgur.com/YSCujIH.jpg

The next morning I would head out alone to target tuna and giant trevally. The tuna were nowhere to be found on the ride so we went to a surf break on the reef that is actually a popular surfing spot, but no one surfing it that day. We positioned the boat on the offshore side of the reef and we’re casting big poppers and stick baits to the breaking surf. After about 10 minutes of casting, the water exploded around my popper and I hooked up. After a good fight, we landed another barracuda. Fun, but not the target species.

A short while later, I had another explosion on the popper. The fish missed it twice and came back a 3rd time. I was hooked up and the fight was on. I landed my first GT. While not a big one, it put up an amazing fight in the curling waves and current. I landed a new species for me. I have to say, pound for pound, these fish fight harder than a tuna.

I landed several more including these beautiful fish https://i.imgur.com/hObi5JN.jpg https://i.imgur.com/Zl4LbKp.jpg

My arms and shoulders were complaining but we continued on. We went to a longer rolling surf break and the captain said that they don’t get as many in this area, but they tend to be bigger. On my 2nd cast with a stick bait, there was a huge explosion on the plug and I was hooked up. This fish was screaming drag for a long time and I was concerned he would take me over the reef and cut me off. Once he started to slow down, the captain moved the boat offshore of the surf break to safety which took more line. As I gained line back, the fish took more. After what was probably a 15 minute or so fight, I got this beautiful GT to the boat. This one was above 15kg or 33 lbs. while not giant as far as GT’s are concerned, a big one for the surf and a spinning rod. The picture does not do this fish justice. It was 15+ kg of muscle. I was wiped out after this one.

I ended up with one barracuda and 4 GT. Exhausted, we tried trolling for dogtooth tuna and casting an inside reef for bluefin trevally but neither cooperated. Still an amazing day for a 4hr hour trip. I had so much fun I’m going again on Monday. I still can’t believe I’m here.

Rainy and windy today but still lots to do here. This was a cool surprise- walking back from breakfast this morning (It’s Saturday morning here), they were harvesting coconuts from a tree in our front yard. A few whacks with a machete later and I’m drinking fresh coconut water. I also picked a few ripe banana right from a tree in our garden. Amazing.

Re: Fiji

Beautiful trip & thx for sharing!

Looks like you had an awesome time enjoying the islands.

Wife & I just got back from Turqs and Caicos this morning.  While there, all those diversity classes the government gave me before retirement finally paid off.  In the Islands I discovered that I was a lesbian trapped in a man's body.

Re: Fiji

Well, it is said that all good things must come to an end, and so too has this amazing trip. It only took minutes after in LAX to realize how incredible the people and the service were in Fiji. Back to reality for sure.

I did manage one more trip out, this time with their guide Jaga from Australia. He was amazing. Full of knowledge and willing to teach. Unfortunately the conditions that day were “nautical”. While the winds came down to about 10 to 12 knots that morning, the sea was chopped up pretty bad and the surf breaks were big from high winds the prior 24 hours. We couldn’t even fish the break we fished last week because it was too big. In spite of that I did manage to boat a few more GT and Jaga landed another job fish which made for a great dinner the next day.

Fighting a fish in the rolling surf. Not too bad here but we did have to deal with some 10 to 12 foot rollers through much of the day. On average it was 5 to 6 in the surf break. Needless to say, I was physically beaten up that day and needed a day or so to recover, but enjoyed every minute of it.

Not as big as the 15kg fish last week, but still some nice, hard fighters. In the next pic you can see swell and the light colored water reflecting the reef. That’s where most hits came from.

Two nights before we left the island we discovered the coolest thing right after sunset. Flying fox bats migrated out of their cave to feed for the night. These things were huge, but so beautiful. There were hundreds of them over a 15 to 20 minute period and we saw them the last 2 nights.

The next morning we went on a manta ray snorkel. It’s a short 10 minute boat ride to a small island that has coral “cleaning stations” that the mantas come in to allow smaller fish to pick parasites off of them. We saw 5 different mantas less than 15 feet from us and it was incredible. Unfortunately no pics.

The night before we left, the resort sent another bottle of champagne to our room and we sat out back and enjoyed the full moon. It was even more beautiful than the picture.

While we were sad to leave, it’s a good thing we came home when we did, I may have never left. wink

This little island was truly a paradise. We’re already trying to figure out how to get back there in a few years.

Re: Fiji

Wow!!!  Amazing!!!!  I always knew Fiji was beautiful, but I never wanted to spend that much time in the air anymore not knowing what to expect.  But I have to admit, eating from the land and sea is something that would inspire me to go immediately.  And, the fruit bats!!  that is something I want to see in person.  I bet it's amazing to see all that beauty and a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Trust me it’s torture transitioning back to reality and looking back at the pics, however, it’s not lost on me how blessed i am to have been able to experience it.
