9-27-22, UP

John and I had this date on the books with the hopes of fishing up river. Our only two options to put in were White's Ferry or Edwards Ferry. Both are over an hour from my house.

Late yesterday, John said that he remembered the ramp at WF being tough to launch with the shallow water conditions. That, plus a windy forecast made me wonder if we should go.

So, knowing that if we couldn't launch at WF, we could always go to EF so I said we were going.

We got to the ramp shortly before 7:30a...

...and after surveying the ramp, we decided to launch. Piece of cake. Crisis averted. On the water at 7:45a.

We ran up the river a bit and noticed some really skinny water along the way but we made it without scraping bottom.

We start fishing and there is no wind but we also got no bites. Finally, at 8:30a, John takes the skunk off!

I think this one was 15" and change but fat! He caught 1 or 2 smaller ones before I got my skunk off at 10a!

We had very few bites and were wondering where the fish were.

So we drifted, hit a shore line or two, drifted some more and nothing.

I then spotted a sand bar and saw some current on it. When we got there, I saw that it was really skinny but we were parked in a little trough with some good flow. John throws behind the boat and this FAT 18"er and slams his Chartreuse 4" TRD!!!

We whooped it up and then I threw back there with my Berkley Max Scent. I felt a little weight and thought a rock took the bait until it moved. The fish took off and I decared that it was a carp!

Nope, an 18.25"er!!

These fish were well fed...

I basically said the day was complete and that everything else was a bonus.

At the end of the day, John had 12 and I had 6. Most of mine were small but there was a cool moment when I saw a small smallie underneath a rock. I told John about it and and made a nice toss above it. When the bait got sucked in under the rock, I felt the bite and got the fish from under the rock. It was not big but it was a cool scene.

Oh, John kept catching big ones.

For the day he finished with an 18"er , 2 at 17", a 17.75"3r, a 16"er and a 15.5"er. What a day!!  Here are more of his catches.

Simply outstanding!!

All the big fish came between 11:15a and 1:15p. I believe we left the bite so we could get a bite. We didn't eat until 2p (my goal was 1p) but it was worth the wait. Both for the quality of the food and the fish catching.

The wind was a PIA between 10-11a. It was 15mph sustained with some pants ruffling gusts. It was bad enough that I thought we were done. But it calmed down just before the big bite. We still had wind but it was now manageable.

We ate at the WH Grill...they do an excellent sammie. I had the Reuben upon recommendation of the manager. John had a grilled chicken sammie. I am surprised that we got the pic (thanks to John reminding me) because we were inhaling the grubb! It was top notch!!

On the way home, we kept recanting the good day. It started slow, got worse and then it was just plain ole good smallie fishin'! Maybe John can add some of the details that I left out.

Fun day!

Re: 9-27-22, UP

Great trip, Captain!  Ernie pointed out that trough that we caught our big ones in.  Maybe a 1-2 foot dip between the point (almost a sand bar) and the main river.  We were super pumped after catching those two pretty much back to back.  I know I look like a storm trooper, but the wind kills my eyes with allergies and it really kicked up mid day.  My eyes are all red and puffy, but well worth the pain for the day we had!

We each had fish we called and Ernie had a little one he sight fished out from under a rock.  I will book that captain again if he will have me!  big_smile  wink

At lunch, John looked like he was crying! lol  I laugh but I know it was messing with him. But those fat fish tugging at his line made it all worth while...

Holy cows!  talk about some fatties!  I'm not even talking about the fatty cigar your smoking ernie.  And then to top it off with the ruben...what a day.  Thanks for the report and pics.  It's a busy time of year for me at work so it's always cool to see others out there living the dream.

Beautiful fish & glad you were able to launch ... water was low & full of grass down river

My eyes are all red and puffy, but well worth the pain for the day we had!

You should really have that checked out and taken care of.  Recently found out there's some great eye specialists locally and some of the new technology makes procedures allot easier than they used to be

Thanks for the tip, George.  I go to specialists at the Eye Center.  Believe me, I am not one to shy away from treatment.  Dry eyes and extreme allergies mostly.

Re: 9-27-22, UP

There was minimal grass up river and thankfully, never an issue. But the skinny water made for some bottom scrapping and a couple of “stuck” moments.

Just be careful - there's some bad ones out there

One told my wife she'd loose her vision and I just couldn't accept that with all the modern break throughs in medicine

So I went to Google and found a great eye surgeon behind Home Depot that fixed her with a 45 min procedure

edit.  And that corned beef sandwich looks like the bomb
