7-6-21, UP

When John and I set today up to fish, we didn't know it was gonna be a HOT one...but we went anyway.

We met up at 6a (had to sleep in due to grandson being over at the house last night to watch the AV fireworks).

But, it was a nice morning when we started...

John took the skunk off 1st...actually, 3 times!

These were not big but they were fat, healthy and feisty!

Then, he announces that he needs a snack!

There were no killer spiders on the banana so I let him eat it!  lol

When the sun got up, there was no wind, and it got hot! Very stale air. So we made a run which gave us instant A/C.

Finally, I scored on a nice hit. This was a really pretty channel cat.

BTW, the lost fish syndrome was still plaguing the boat. I think we lost 6-7 fish that we had on. Some we never saw and some took a leap and spit the hook. The good thing is that losing a fish is better than just getting bites! Good sign...we just need to get better at holding on to them.

John and I both scored on a LMB here!

And lost a couple too...

We then made a short run and started drifting.

John connected on a nice one that was right behind a log in the middle of no where. We actually called that one.

Then, I saw a rock and made a perfect cast right behind it and got slammed! Smallie...nope, too much power. Carp or cat?

Yep, a 5.6# channel cat!

What a ride...caught on a ML stick!

It was getting hot but we still caught one here and there...

..with my last one being the biggest of the day at 14".

John caught one more as time was running out. I told him it was the bottom of the 9th and he connected.

All in all, a very good day for fishing a hot day just after all the shenanigans on the river due to the holiday weekend.

John caught 7 smallies (his most for the year) and 2 LMB. I like to watch John when he fishes on my boat. He has less duties than when he fishies alone. We even used the drift anchor for a while and it helped us.

I caught 2 channel cats, a LMB and a smallie.

We were off the water by 1p...a little later than planned because some occasional wind would cool us off...or maybe make us not so hot.

Good day. Our river is showing some promise. Add the caught fish to the lost fish and we had over 20 hooked fish! Been a while since we used that number on the UP...

Great day, Ernie!  You know how to pick the hot ones!  We had to change up plans due to the conditions.  Nothing on topwater or cranks today.  All fish caught on plastics.  Mine were caught on a cotton candy grub and a new(to me) 2.8 Jackall  swimbait on a small SWM head.  That was the ticket for me.

That catfish was a beast and put up a hell of a fight!  Very strong and long fish.  The SS Rojas performed flawlessly.  We stayed just a bit past our planned time, but numbers were caught.  Thank you for the luxury ride!

Advantage of a jet on a hot day - instant a/c when running

Nice job to the two of you getting out and connecting
