Hammer Time!

I was discussing how some lures tend to catch more fish with a friend.  He called those lures hammers.  With the hot weather keeping me off the water, I decided to pull a few out and take a photo.

I have others that I lost and replaced, but did not include those as they are not proven.

Re: Hammer Time!

Very cool and interesting. No jerk baits in your hammer collection?

A lot of those lures are tired (but tested and successful).

Most of my hard baits still look new…and all have single hooks. This is a part of the game that I don’t play much in for some reason.

Re: Hammer Time!

Good point.  Jerkbaits are not my biggest confidence bait.  Here are some additions.  The LC deep diver has done well.  The Yo Zuri has had the numbers and the others have either big fish or a good day.  The Wiggle Wart is the one I bought from Ernie and had the epic day in the Washington Channel.  Unfortunately, I broke the bill and later replaced it with the circuit board one.  It swims good, but has not caught a fish since.

Re: Hammer Time!

I'm always amazed how John knows the names and color schemes of all of these baits.  And soft plastics too.

I do good in just remembering the generic term for what they are....

Re: Hammer Time!

We are all just gear 'hos at heart

As most know my hobby is making baits.  But my true love is getting something that someone has made.  I've been collecting fishing lures for a long time and when I find someone making crafting their own tackle, I'm weak and have to buy

It all started at a small tackle shop in MD.  I ran into an 80 year old making turning balsa on a lathe and selling them on a card table at the store.  This was a time when small tackle shops would invite local craftsmen to display and sell their wares and not ask for a single penny.  Sad to say, next time I went into the store the guy had passed RIP.  I threw a few off his baits but the rest are preserved for posterity

Met a guy named John Mills on a tackle craft board.  He liked my jigs so I sent him a bunch.  He returned the favor by sending me some of his custom made crank baits.  As you can see some are well used, but others are pieces of art that I have a problem throwing

I was just getting into tying hair and got an order from Phil Shaeffer before a hurricane struck his house and demolished his tackle building operation.  I spend 2 hours on the phone with Phil after the hurricane hit and he shared allot of his secrets and sold me the rest of the hair he could salvage.  I still tie with it

Sad to say the craftsman who made these baits passed too.  Ended up buying a batch and giving them to DrX for his 60th birthday.  RIP Earthworm77

Met another craftsman through Ogbudha on RS.  Called the guy up and told him what I wanted and he knew exactly where I was going to throw them and why.

I started tinkering with tackle craft when I started finding lures, cleaning them up and giving them a new life.  This one spent time in Maine and Canada and as you can see, the toothy critters liked it allot.  I have no idea what it is, maybe John can identify?

Lastly, I was approached by a guy on RS to buy some SWM jigs.  I don't sell anything, but sent him a goodie bag.  Not expecting anything in return, I got a package in the mail

Gotta luv the barter system

Re: Hammer Time!

That topwater looks like a customized Zara Spook?  Has a different tail hook attachment.  Hooks are Excalibur or Xcalibur TX3 replacements.  Good hooks and cool bait!  Is it wood?  May be a very old knock off.

Lots of cool baits there, George!

Re: Hammer Time!

Good stuff!

A couple of years back, I had an incredible jerk bait day using Craig's (earthworm77) custom painted Megabass knockoff. The smallies would not stay off it. George witnessed it.

Awesome stuff gents!

Re: Hammer Time!

DrX - Zara Spook - that's it.  It's plastic.  I switched out the hooks for Gamakatzu trebles and tied wee bit of flashaboo on the rear treble

Yes Ernie - I remember that day.  That jerk from Craig was magic.   I've had more than a couple Cinderella sessions on jerk baits.
