6-28-21, Wicomico River

I picked up George at 5:30a and told him to bring his coffee but to stay hungry as we were going to hit the Chaptico Market for breakfast.

And that we did. We each got a sausage/egg/cheese sammie and also some bread pudding.

I had asked George if he liked bread pudding and he was so-so. Until he tasted it!!

We get to the ramp and the wind is blowing harder than predicted. It was coming up river while the tide was starting to run out. Lots of chop. I was not happy.

When I fish the Wicomico, 99% of the time we go left. Today I went right as I wanted to try Mill Point but was also looking for a place in the lee.

It was tough to hold the boat in place but both of us got the skunk off quickly.

We then started my normal milk run and the wind started easing up.

Everywhere we went, we caught fish. Plenty of them although I was telling George that it was a little slower than normal. He just grinned.

This is one of my favorite spots...

...but it only gave up about a dozen perch.

In one of the spots, George caught a nice 10"er but I didn't get the pic.

Later, I got a 10.25"er which was going to end up to be the big perch of the day.

I took George to the place that doesn't make sense.

No trees, no rocks...just water. Except that there is a sand bar that you can't see until low tide. We were at high tide still but once we started throwing, we started catching. Many dozens were caught here. Heck, we may have caught over 100 here! We had at least 10 doubles and many of those were in a row.

Then, I hear George say, "this one is for real". Using a L stick with 4 lb line, George coaxed this nice striper, a 21.5"er, into the net!

That was cool.

We went over to St. Margaret's Island and it was slow but we caught fish. And we saw some rays doing the deed...it looked like. We also heard the peacocks but never saw them. Of course, we say ospreys and blue heron. A couple of eagles made some pass byes.

It was getting hot and late (for lunch) so we made another stop at the sand bar (now, we could see it). I told George that it was low tide and that the fish were probably resting. Nope, we caught a few more dozen including this nice one.

We then tried a couple more spots but we were hot, tired and hungry.

So back to the Market we go. They were out of raw country sausage (which I always get to bring home) and I was disappointed but the nice lady said they had some links and asked, "how many do you want?". My answer, "all of them!". She obliged.

We were wondering what to order and George sees some country pork concoction (he will have to describe it for you) and ordered a sammie with it. The lady behind the counter did a double take because she could not believe George knew what it was.

I then spotted the 1/4lb spicy hot dog wrapped in bacon (and fried) and ordered that along with a couple of fried chicken drums (they got eaten too fast for a pic).

All in all, it was a great day,

Great food.

Great weather (after the morning blow).

Great company.

Great fishing.

Great food.

Great food indeed!

Is it brackish down there? Do you flush your boat and trailer afterward at the ramp?

It’s salty. No place to rinse at the ramp. But did so at George’s house before I took it to the barn.

We purposely did not bring any food on board. We didn't want to waste time eating on the boat (well, we did finish our bread pudding during a time out). We were fishing fast so we could go eat!

Chaptico Market is one of my all-time favorite places!

Ernie,
You know...if you would just skip the time you fish, you could spend more time eating breakfast and lunch. And probably also be able to add a mid-morning snack.

Re: 6-28-21, Wicomico River

Thank you again for inviting me to this magical place

What started as diversity in the morning turned into a true adventure for the rest of the trip.

And even heard the peacocks

We were cracking up so much at the "just water" place when we counted 10 double hookups in a row.  It was insane how many fish were hanging around that "no trees, no rocks" place.  Insane.  And on super light gear, even more fun.

Thx for being a great net person on that striper.  As soon as we saw color Ernie was right there with the net waiting for the catch.  Awesome fish on light tackle.  And we did it!

The river was full of osprey and bald eagles fishing.  I'd watch them hover over a spot, then drop like a rock into the water coming up with a fish in their talons - gotta luv nature!

I couldn't believe how fast we wolfed down that sausage sandwich - and the fresh ground Amish pork was the ticket!  And the bread puddling - not really my thing but glad I don't live next to that store or I'd weigh 300#

Wife loved her coconut cake I brought but also wanted to try the bread pudding and gave me a little h@ll about not bringing her some..  I tried LoL

At lunch, my first choice was a crab cake, but since they don't make those until dinner, started looking through the deli for something interesting to make a sandwich.  Then I found it.  The ladies couldn't believe I wanted to a sandwich made from it, and asked if I knew what it was.  I sure did - Headcheese.  I had the counter ladies cracking up when I said it's the German in me.  It's made from all the parts of the pig that don't make it in sausage or lunch meat, chopped up, then added to a loaf pan with lard and aspic to congeal.  Awesome stuff when you can find it but wouldn't want to make a steady diet of it.

I thought for sure after that sandwich and the exciting day I'd doze off on the drive home, but was so pumped up from the trip there was no way

Very very cool day!!

Ha! But fishing is what drives me to go to these cool places...to eat!

Great report Ernie! The food looks amazing as always. I'm also a big fan of head cheese, I don't see it very often but always get it when I do.
