Occoquan River 4/28/21

Well, after seeing Ernie, John, and crew have a blast with the shad run, I finally got out on the Big O too. My dad couldn't make it, he forgot he had a doctor's appointment, so I settled for crewman Brandon. I promised him we'd spend some time cruising around on plane on the Potomac when it got hot. His first time riding a boat on plane was a couple weeks ago on Capt. Mike's Mako when we did our crappie trip and he loved it.

Here's first mate Brandon making sure the docklines weren't going anywhere.

We headed up towards the falls past the footbridge, and it was just a fleet of kayakers and one guy fly fishing on a SUP, that was cool. As I was showing Brandon the technique on my UL baitcaster, I get one on and let him reel it in.

Here's one of Brandon taking a picture of me just as the fish is about to smack my face.

We ended up with 10 in about 1 hour before Brandon wanted to go cruise around. I was OK with that because I spent about 20 minutes of the 1 hour untangling double shad dart rigs on his rod. All 10 but 1 shad hit a gold spoon.

It seemed like forever to Brandon to get past the no wake zone. But we cruised around for quite a bit, and was planning to go up the river to see some monuments, but once we got near Mt. Vernon there was just timber everywhere and I made the executive decision to turn around. We were getting hungry and thirsty anyways and you know where we were going...

Brickmakers, finally! I got a jerk chicken chili and BM burger with bacon, LT and pickles. It was fantastic...the cheddar and buttered bun were worth the artery cloggage. Brandon got the popcorn shrimp and it was freshly battered. Brandon finished it off with an icecream cookie sandwich. He's hooked and will be back.
