It's now a 3 year tradition that we take Quinn to the Wicomico River for a bit of white perch fishing. We also honored Carl, who brought me to the white perch game. His memory will live on and I bet he is all smiles!

Last year was a banner day with a record 315 white perch caught for the day.

As per customs, we hit the Chaptico Market for breakfast and it did not disappoint. And they had bread pudding!

We put in around 8a and this time, rather than starting near the ramp, I went all the way to the mouth of the Wicomico. John kept saying that we were passing up a lot of fishing spots but i had a plan.

Both Quinn and I scored keepers (9.5"+)...





...but that was it at the rocks so it was on to spot #2...St. Margaret Island.

We cough a few on the west side, very few on the north side and the we hammered them on the east side. It was crazy. Doubles and triples galore.

After over 100 fish, I told the guys that we had a lot of river to cover so we made a move. I took them to White Point (there used to be an island there but it was one when i 1st started fishing there in the mid 80's).

We were in 2-3' of water and a slight rip was visible. If you look where we were, it was out in the middle of the river. No cover, no structure, no nothing...except the shoal.

Here, we annihilated the perch and got a few stripers as well.







I asked Quinn what he thought when I brought him to this place. He said it did not look like anything and wondered why we stopped there until he started to catch fish every 8 of 10 cats.

After catching over 50 fish here, we took a break and made a plan for the next spot.



We had talked about doing some wading so I beached the boat...



...and we proceeded to catch a bunch more perch and a red fish!



We were now way over our record and the guys were getting greedy with their numbers. John and Quinn were having a battle...of epic proportion!

As we were wading...and catching, i took a break to look at the radar and noticed the storms getting closer so I told the guys it was time to pack it in...so they thought.

I stopped at another place and I had something big scream away with my lure. This place is a known striper hangout so I suspect that's what got me. John and Quinn kept adding numbers and another red came aboard.



We hung around and drifted some more and caught a bunch more. Finally, we were worn out. The numbers below will explain why!

The final tally was:

2 stripers (John and Ernie)
3 reds (2 for John & 1 for Quinn)
4 spot (Quinn)

586 white perch...this is NOT a misprint. Old record was 315!

119 WP for Ernie
232 WP for John
235 WP for Quinn

The only negative is that keepers are hard to come by but these are spunky fish!

I had planned to get of the water by 1p...2 at the latest. We got off a little after 3. I could not stop these guys. What a battle!

It was starting to get dark anyway so we went over to Chaptico Market for our lunch

John and Quinn got Fried Chicken (I asked the lady behind me in line why she bought so much fried chicken, her answer was, "because it's Chaptico Market Fried Chicken")

I had a stuffed ham sammie that was outstanding. A southern MD tradition. I also had a fat hot dog wrapped in bacon and fried. Holy Toledo!

What a day!

On the way home, we got hammered with the storms, but we didn't care. We were more than satisfied.
