Bob and I were on the water shortly after 7:30a. We put is at Spa Creek...
...and slowly motored out to the mouth of the river, hitting the rocks 1st.
We scored right away...
Man, what a frustrating day! I spent all day trying to keep close to Bob in the fish count. I thought I had him at one point when he had some line issues. I think I got within 7 or 8 but then I had a huge birds nest and he just pulled away.
Both of us had 11"ers but I forgot to take Bob's pic!
Bob lost a bigger one that was a heartbreak. We saw it but it never surfaced.
I hooked a ray early that acted like a snag. I swear it was a rock. Then it moved. Then it bolted and took my perch lure with it.
We never went inside the river and it was so calm out that we did the outer wall at the 3 towers. We caught quite a few fish during that drift.
I got banged hard on my whippy UL and had to run around the boat a bit. We kinda got a look at the fish before he got away but had no consensus on what it might have been. Bob kept saying it was a monster perch which completely frazzled me. I think that was part of his plan to beat my butt!
All I know is that it was bigger than any perch I've seen...probable a fat little striper that just showed us his back.
We decided to go in and try a few places as Bob was closing in on 100 fish for the day.
These boats never seize to amaze me...
As he got close, I said, "no way you are hitting 100", and he stopped giving me the count. When I thought he was close to 95, I pulled the plug and called it. I finished at 60.
So...I back up the trailer and exchange seats with Bob as I get the boat up the rollers. I tied the nose like I always do and gave Bob the thumbs up. As he is pulling me out I heard a loud metal noise which was chilling. I yelled to Bob to stop and lo and behold, the hitch had come off the car. Luckily, I use safety chains. We found the pin nearby but no sign of the cotter pin. Hmmmm
Bob asks if I forgot to put the pin in and I say no. The hitch is always on the truck.
My suspicion is that the cotter pin slipped, failed or worse, someone pulled it.
We managed to put the boat back on the water, pull the hitch and re attach the trailer to my car, with the help of a bystander.
I was pissed to say it mildly. If someone pulled that pin as a joke or prank, I hope they get diarrhea for a week! This was the most frustrating part of the day for sure...until I got home and ripped my shirt on the garage door.
Great day of perchie fishing for sure!

Another great trip with Ernie, and I have enough white perch fillets for some good breakfasts.
Talk about a self fulfilling prophecy..... "no way you are hitting 100". I tried, and I might have made it with just 10 more minutes. Leaving was a good choice, it was time.
As for the hitch coming out of the receiver, words can't express Ernie's reaction. He was literally beside himself. Try to picture two hot blooded Cubans running in a small circle with flames shooting from their ears (I heard words I didn't think Ernie knew). At the time I don't think that week's worth of diarrhea would have been sufficient. No harm no foul, just a quick 15 minutes and we were on our way.

Great day! Always something with boats. Ernie getting spanked in perch catches and then almost loses his trailer... Must have been a fun ride home. Seriously, great job finding the perch!!

Wow, that could have been a disaster.

Shoot, I get perch spanked all the time.
The ride home was fine...I had already let out all my anger and disgust! Plus I was happy that the fix was fairly quick and painless.

Yeah...Bob and I talked about the timing of that. Leaves me wondering how/when the pin failed or slipped. Just ordered a lock system for it.

When you perch fish with Ernie you'll do well to fish a lure you know will catch them, and stick with it. No matter how well E's lure is working he'll change it every 10 minutes. The time lost in digging out a new prospect and tying it on gives you time to get ahead. We fished for 6 hours, I used one lure. I did lose 2 of them, but tied on identical lures.

I used...a dozen different ones. At least!
Just went through my perch box. Must be 50 different variations in there. They will all get used at some point.
As well, I may need to break out a Woody lure as they are just resting on the wall.

I know how Ernie likes to switch things up. I always have a lock on my hitch and trailer. I hear people will cut them too.

My trailer is always locked to the hitch when in tow. A new hitch pin lock arrives today.
