I was going to take my dad out for our annual Father's Day trip tomorrow morning, but the weather and tide looked better today. We got to Slavin's at 7:30AM, and the lot was almost full. Same plan as two days ago, hit the big pond and look for 83+ degree clear water, but this time instead of going right into the pads, I followed along the rice grass edge. It was cloudy and the water hadn't come up yet where there was good water in the pads. That paid off with a 3lber on a grass point, he took it as soon as the keitech flapper hit the water.
Cruising along the grass, I get smashed on the toad, but whatever it was pushed the darn lure up into the air and missed it, I guess I was reeling too fast. I slowed it down, and the fish didn't seem to mind that the keitech action was subsurface. This guy hit along the edge.
We get to the back wall of the big pond, and it's just shade and rice grass. It felt good because the clouds gave way to the big yellow circle, but didn't get any hits along that long stretch. Now we had enough water in the pads to start throwing in there. My dad wants to throw whatever the heck he wants, today was a modified fish that had a lip that he shaved down. Basically, it was a weedless hollowed bodied fish with a shaved lip, it works subsurface and moves like a S-Waver. But he got fish with it. Two really good LMB in the pads:
During slack tide, I ventured down a small creek looking for signs of snakehead. The water was way muddier, due to the lack of hydrilla, but it was definitely a very fishy spot. No bites, but when we went back to the main creek and the water started moving, I saw this guy cruising in the hydrilla and pitched the toad in front of his face and he slurped it.
We went into the pads for the outgoing tide, and this guy ate the toad right near the boat.
My dad is wearing his lucky red flannel shirt, although it's not 90+ degrees, it's still 84, hot and sunny. Just as we're about to leave, I think he gets his weedless fish lure stuck on a pad. He says he has a fish on, but the line isn't moving or anything. So I go over to help him and I reel in a pad stalk, and I see a long dark outline. I had the rod back to him, and he water skies a 5lb snakehead to the boat, and it proceeds to go nuts of course. His lucky shirt pays off, and we harvested the snakehead for his 80th birthday next weekend.
Another memorable trip with my dad.

It’s such a great little boat for the pads...but sadly I still need a bigger boat for the family.
