6-3-20, UP

Paul and I had scheduled to fish Beaverdam today but the wind forecast scared us off so we hit the UP.

No wind in the morning and a ton off flying ants everywhere. We sprayed them and more came to the boat.

We started at the point where we saw some activity but it was carp...frolicking around.

We then fished the ledge from end to end.

We needed to get the ants off us so we ran up to the rocks on the MD side. The and followed us. And then, they were gone. Just like that.

The rocks did not produce (except this big stick)...

...so we ledge fished across to VA.

Finally, at one of the last rocks/ledges, Paul hooked up!

Finally, skunk off!

We worked the VA rocks, top and bottom and nothing.

So we decided to gis the boulder filed just off John's island and Paul got bit again (right behind a boulder).

A little further down and he gets a bigger one off a boulder.

So the pattern was slow and low and behind rocks.

We decided to fish the chute and nothing. As we were leaving t go to the next stop, the boat motor hiccuped a few times. Paul could not get the fuel ball tight.

Finally, she got going.

The motor did it again and I was starting to worry so we drifted a little, got hot as all get out (but with a nice stiff breeze) and decided to call it a day.

Before we quit, I took 2  laps around the 2nd island at full speed and everything was OK.

But, when I put the hose on the engine after I got home, I knew the problem was not good. I called Jim Starkey (my boat builder) and he told me to try a few things but to no avail. He said, "I 'll see you when you get here".

BOAT- Break  Out Another G!

The fishing remains slow on the UP with very few bites.

For the record, Ernie outfished me on the sticks today, but miraculously he was able to do quick releases before I could grab the camera. big_smile

In spite of lack of bites, it was a great day out on the water. Thanks Ernie.

Well, that puts a damper on my plan to get out there in the morning before the storms come.  But then again, It will rain for the next couple days.

Brave of you to go out in the heat.  At least you guys got a few.

The heat was not really that much of an issue. In the morning, it was very nice. When it warmed up, the winds came with it.

I think we were braver to go out and fish a hurting fishery.

Hopefully, Jeff Green is right about this, "Great news about smallmouth bass on the upper Potomac River. The Maryland DNR and Manning Warmwater Hatchery has been successful in spawning Potomac River smallmouth. Once they reach a size of 3 to 5 inches (fingerling size) they will be released back into the river.

In 2019 the DNR purchased 2000 4 to 5 inch smallmouth from an out of state commercial hatchery. These fish were released into the river from Brunswick Maryland, north towards Dam 4. I believe the work that the DNR has done and is still doing will positively influence the population of smallmouth found in the river for years to come."

We need some south of Brunswick.

Cool.  Sorry to hear about your boat.  Hope it's nothing serious.

Perhaps a fuel delivery issue. It’s down in Scottsville now.
