I got out early and was on the water about 5:30am. Sunrise was beautiful.
I started fishing the MD side for a little while and then floated half of Ernie's island. The water was a little stained and the level was 2.75 feet at Point of Rocks. There was a white fly hatch going on all morning, but little surface activity. The carp were active on the shorelines. After no bites there, I decided to run further upriver and float about 3/4 of the next island up. I was throwing a 1/8 oz white buzzbait, a TRD TicklerZ on a weedless ned head , a tube on a SWM head and crankbaits. I tried a spinnerbait, but conditions were not right. It remained cloudy most of the morning and the water temp was just under 73 degrees.
A little more than halfway down the island, I felt a bite on the tube and set the hook into a decent fish. It fought hard and I finally netted the 17" smallie.
That was my biggest smallie from the UP this year. It was healthy.
I had company. A deer and a Bald Eagle Family. I was just able to get one adult and the juvenile.
I ran up to work an area of the MD shore and this fella would not budge.
I saw another deer and a black squirrel along with gray ones. The sun broke through the clouds about 10:30am and it started to get hot. I hooked one more smallie about 10 inches on the tube, but it self released at the boat. I did not get any more bites. There were lots of the little white flies on the surface.
I got off the water about 11:30am as the park was getting busy. Nice morning with not much action fish-wise.

Very nice report. And nice 17”er! You had more wildlife action as well. Did you see all the HS kids down by the crew docks?
